I'M NO MECHANIC
Submitted by JGS on Mon, 2010-07-05 16:01
I have a 1997 evinrude 150hp 2 stroke.Yesterday travelling back from the ffb the conditions being so good i opened her up full throttle getting up to 38 knots. Then the check engine alarm sounds and then goes off with the motor not missing a beat.Does anyone know of this to be common if not what sort of faults should i be expecting or looking for.I know this is a very broad question but i am definately not what you would call "mechanicly minded" so any advice would be helpfull
cheers

Heat Related
More than likely to be heat related , check the impellor first !

im no mechanic either
maybe the alarm was caused by cavitation (or is that ventilation) causing lack of water flow thro the motor when you are wot

neither am I
But anyhoo i'll give it a go. How many revs were you pulling at full throttle ? Wasnt over revving ? I'm guessing your motor at WOT would be 5000 - 5500 revs.

temp gauge
i had a 97 ocean pro which is the same model, if the oil is low it should slow down the revs to 1500 rpm but the oil bottle does have an alarm to indicate that your down low but not totally run out and being WOT it may have triggered the alarm with the oil forced back , the main alarm is for over temp and water pump operation and would have kept sounding until the motor cooled off, did the motor stop or cut out or did the alarm stop sounding when you back off the throttle if so there maybe other things to check , my first guess is the water flow through the motor

Thermostat.
Pull it out, drop it into some boiling water, and see if it opens. If it doesn't, that's at least part of your problem.
