Inboard Motor Upgrade

Hi all

About to sign up with HiTech Marine to install a new 3ltr Mercruiser with Alpha leg.
Has anyone had dealings with HiTech and anything I should know about the Mercruisers.
I am replacing a Volvo and dont know much about mercs.
Thanks

Never heard of HiTech

Never heard of HiTech Marine, but you're always going to be safe with a mercruiser.

Have you considered a marine diesel set up?

Cheers,

ive got a few pieces off

Sun, 2007-07-22 16:44

ive got a few pieces off hitech and had no problems - they are one of the few that can order older OMC inboard parts .... in saying that moby dick marine in broome is the best for parts .... i have no idea who runs it but im in busso and they freight me parts that noone else will deal with..
Im doing homework for a new motor now and i must admit im struggeling to chose. got choices of volvo d3-190 or a mercruiser 350 .... worst thing is finding out what will suit my boat and give me the economy/range i want... how did you find your volvo Paul ??

Feral - the Volvo was good

Sun, 2007-07-22 21:22

I have a petrol Volvo AQ140a in an old 21 foot penguin and it has served me well for the past 15 years. Apart from replacing the usual manifolds etc it has been good. It is now getting a bit long in the tooth and about time I updated and as I like the hull a repower is the best option. My only dissatisfaction wth the boat is it is a bit under powered as the volvo is a 2Ltr producing 120 hp at the flywheel the mercruiser is a 3Ltr producing 130 hp at the prop. Sounds like a 30% increase to me and should do the job.

The reason for switching to a Mercruiser is the lack of Volvo dealers and my perceived popularity of the Mercruiser.
One thing that bothers me is the dealer says since it is a trailer boat and I will be flushing the motor after use , there is no need to go for the fresh water cooling option on the motor. I would think the motor is still subject to deteriation from the salt water and closed cooling would be better. Anyone got any comments?

i would get a closed water

i would get a closed water system .. extra weight but less corrosion .. a merc. will chew a bit more fuel but the power would be a great advantage ..

QSD

G'day guys, have you seen the new QSD diesels from Cummins/mercruiser? They certainly look the goods. Rated from 115hp ( 2lt ) up to 350hp ( 4.2lt ), common rail, high pressure injection. They are also reduced in height and length to reduce weight and space consumed. Could be another option. Not too sure on price but economy figures would be pretty attractive I would assume given the way diesels have headed in the last few years.

Cheers Mike

Fri, 2009-02-13 12:47

Hi Paul,

Interested in this post as i find myself in a simalar position to yourself.I have an aq140a hooked upto a 280 leg in my Chivers seamaster and have been looking at a repower.Everyone seems to think i need to go to the v6 mercrusier but i,m not that interested in 25 knot speeds i currently chugg arount at 15 knots on the plane. How did your repower go and was the 3.0lt merc a big differance to the old aq140.

cheers for now

re power

Sat, 2009-02-14 13:13

Hi Marshy
The re power was the best thing I have ever done , would highly recomend it. The 3ltr merc is fantastic. Far more power than I had before with the volvo. I have an old ( heavy ) 6.4mtr peguin fibreglass boat that weighs about 2 tone and the 3ltr merc gets it up on plane in a flash. Top speed is now just over 50klm/hr and there is no problem with a following sea as I have the power to keep up. I too was told the v6 was the way to go but I am happy I stuck to my plan and got the 3ltr.
Let me know if you want any more info - email sent.

mercruiser 3 ltr

Sat, 2009-02-14 15:26

Hello Marshy, I have a 3 ltr efi with alfa one leg done 350 hours. Its in my 21 foot glass boat . Fantastic economy if going steady 15 to 18 knots . Very reliable never any trouble. Sea water cooled. Runs cool as a cucumber under any conditions. Make sure you give extra good flush, then no drama. But then your Seamaster is very heavy and because of this I might be tempted to go the V6 with 220 odd horses also better resale value. Funny thing is most people love the extra grunt and will always go for this type of vessle over the smaller perfectly suitable motor. Paul and I are happy so its up to you . Good luck with your selection.  Cheers for now, 22ppc

Those boys have been around for a long time. If they havent got a part they sure will get it in for you. When it comes to Mercruiser they have it all. I never had bad dealings with them, and always dealt with Tony. Talk to them about the freash water cooling system it may cost a little extra but when looking at replacing elbows and manifolds you just might get a longer life running freash water cooling.
