inboard to outboard conversion

I have a 25 foot ali with a 280hp inboard with a vovlo penta 230leg thats been giving me the royal sh*ts for the past few years, and just recently the shaft has slipped in the gear box and will only go forward....the hull is sound. Thequestion ihave is has any1 converted to an outboard? Whats ppls recommend outboard hp is should be looking at for a 25foot ali, , should I go for a pod?? What would the cost for a pod be???? Or is there other options I sould consider!!! the minister of finance has given me the go ahead to get it fixed....think she is sick of me sitting around the house........thanks

You'd want a 250-300hp 4st on sumthing that size. Even twin 150s. Being Ali it's not to hard or exy to get a pod welded on the back! Just depends what you want to spend! I think a 250 4st yamy is about 28k a 300hp around 32k an a 350 about 38! A guy at my yacht club put a pod an 250 Suzuki on a 25' berty an it cost him 31k. Ali pod to glass is a bit more work so Ali to Ali would be cheaper

swap the leg out!! I have seen some conversions and it changes the whole dynamics of the boat. They sit different in the water and the weight distribution is a whole lot different. Just my 2 cents worth. Things to consider though if you do change to o/b

Consider o/board on existing transom

Mon, 2014-11-03 17:23

I saw a SeaMaster (Fibreglass) conversion from inboard to outboard that made no difference to handling. Guy cut the transom to suit the outboard and added a enging well rather than add a pod out the back. Then he added a 300hp outboard. Says he still just sets the throttle and drives regardless of the weather - just like with the inboard. The deck space was heaps more than with  the old inboard but a bit less than a pod (obviously). He said he couldn't have been happier.

You could do the same with Ali.

glass is okay because of the extra weight

might be a bit different with ally. Yes I did see the h/l/s conversion. Not saying it cannot be done. Just considering the variables.

You could always update to a Mercruiser 350 Mag MPI and a brand new leg/transom etc. Probably looking at about the same $30K completed. You would have MPI reliability and probably go with the Bravo III drive for the duo props. Electronic guages, NMEA2000/smartcraft integration with electronics etc etc.
