Increasing transom height
Submitted by Ashen on Mon, 2017-01-23 11:51
Hi guys.
Anyone know roughly how much it'll cost to increase transom height? My boat currently takes 20" outboards but most late model 140hp-175hp are 25" legs. There's a notch in the middle of the boat where the outboard is mounted, which is about 150mm lower than the rest of the transom. So, I don't need to increase the whole transom, just the notch. The dimensions of the notch/gap (whatever is called) is 740mm wide and 150mm high
Is it DIY-able?
Also, peoples thoughts on using jack plates? The Americans seem to love it..

Jack plate
Haha, edited my post about using jack plates as you were replying.
Yeah, I was thinking about using them if they're more cost effective than physically increasing the actual transom.

Certainly do-able - has been
Certainly do-able - has been covered in one of Jeff Websters boating mags/booklets - had a look and can't find the one - in basic terms it involved screwing in a wooden insert and then glassing it over - will keep looking

Screwing wooden insert
Paul, when you say "screwing in wooden insert", I'm assuming its using stainless steel screws to screw "down" the wood into the transom, to fill the notch/gap? Then, glass over? Sounds easy as!

Construction
Is the boat fibreglass or ali? Either way it will be a reasonable easy exercise.
If it is fibreglass, call Greg from GT fibreglass. I am sure he will give you a quick run through over the phone on how to do it. Should probably only need a small amount of marine ply laminated to the correct thickness (or just the right size piece of jarrah) and a reasonably small amount of glass and resin. Probably less than $100. He may also suprise you with a price for him to do it for you.
If its Ali, and you can weld...probably easier again.
I did then the best that I knew how. When I knew better, I did better.
