info for a surf overhead
Submitted by barcelona125 on Wed, 2016-05-11 17:48
hey guys,
just after a little bit of info about overhead surf casting outfits
I wouldnt mind getting my self a good quality 12/13 ft overhead beach rod, use would mainly be casting bigger dead bait and live baits.
firstly what do you guys thinka bout the daiwa sensors, any good ??
if not good what rods do you rate highly ??
also i have a daiwa saltist ld40 two speed, i have it matched up with a shimano deep jig 200 at the moment for boat use. how would this reel go if i use it for surf casting (matched to a different rod of course) ??
or should i go and get my self an overhead with cast control in it ??
thanks for the info

hey mate, i already have a daiwa lexa and use it on my jigging outfit
i am not looking at low profile baitcasters, more so overheads with no level wind on it so it hasnt got as much friction when casting

I use a Lethal 30 running
I use a Lethal 30 running 60lb braid and 50lb topshot on an Assassin Beachmaster heavy and can bomb big baits and sinkers a mile, even further when I slide. Can put a 10oz grapnel well over 100m with little effort.
You can get the assassins for around 300 aud shipped from South Africa otherwise around 450-500 from Getaway outdoors, bluewater tackleworld or online.
If you do go a beachmaster I would personally go the medium, regardless of how heavy you plan on fishing as the heavy is an absolute broomstick.
As for reels, get a star drag casting reel such as the lethal, torium, saltist, fathom, etc.

Rod and reel
if you want to throw big baits then you will need decent rod and reel. It depends on your target species:
dont know much about the prevail or Crank, but these I do know.
RODS
Assassin:-
come stanadard and in HMG, casts between 2 and 10 oz depending on the rod. I have the 10 oz HMG stick and the 2-4 oz lite, awesum rods.
Big bait = 7-9 oz either HMG or normal, (Hmg is lighter and Stronger, but easier to break if used incorrectly)
Posiedon :-
also has various rods weights available:
again 7-9 oz for big baits
Purglas
comes in 1 and 2 piece from 3m to 4.1m
can get anything from a 0 (2 ounce) to the extreme, which will handle anything you can throw.
rule of thumb with them is: you can double the last digit to get a fair indication of casting weight
300/1 is a 3m rod with a 2 oz sinker + bait
numbers go from /0 to /7 and then the extreme.
I have a 350/6 for sliding and big baits, a 400/2 and 400/3 for anything else.
Cheaper option (if you can find one) is the old shimano catana O\H 6 oz 15 foot or 10 foot.
I have the 2 oz 12 foot, 6 oz 12 foot and the 6 oz 10 foot
REELs
depend on budget.
for big baits/ sharks/ rays. look at the Saltist\saltiga 50 range or the Torium 30,
I have 3 x 50 size Diawa reels
if you have the skill the torium 50 is a good reel, it'll handle just about anything that picks up your line, but is a bastard to cast.
these reels come in any size from the 20 to the 50. just match the reel to your target species.
Avets:
make a varity of reels in different sizes, some come with magnetic cast control, brilliant to cast strong drag, bit light on line storage capacilty.
sx, m series, j series, l series and h series, lots of info on the web. I've got 3 of them (yip tackle slut)
LX is the same size as the torium 30
Penn
the squall is a good entry level reel and comes with cast control, the Fathom is my preference (alli body,) has reasonable drag, Still needs to be tested against a good fish though.
the fathom 40 would fit the size bracket
Summary
lots of good and suitable kit.
Decide what you want to target and where, (beach, rocks, reef). (Reef cast would require thicker line high drags and stiffer rod to muscle the fish)
work out your bait size and delivery, (cast, slide,)
decide how far you need to cast
then match your kit.
if you would like to check out some combos drop me a PM and we can go to the beach and you can feel the difference.
Then you can shoot off to one of the site sponsers and get kitted out.
cheers

Hi Nathan, You should check
Hi Nathan,
You should check out the Truth Reels Star Mag.
It is a low profile overhead for beach surfcasting. Has a mechanical and magnetic break. Out of the box it casts amazingly well and is competitive in surf casting comps without any upgrades.
Luca Piras recently has done a few vids casting with the Truth SM youtube.com/watch he recently won the ASF NAtionals (not on a Truth) so he knows how to cast and what good gear looks like.
I have more stock on the way shortly, PM me if you are interested.

Adding to what psion said a 400/2 will handle a 6oz
and a fillet of tailor. (done it many times)
Does 5oz + mulie sweet justice. This is with a thump cast or OTG, not a pendulum though (dont have the skills for this :P).
Nice rods.
Cheers,
D80
Edit: I have a 2 piece version
