Not actually a hand thrown grenade like we associate with the word grenade, the tail fins give it away as a launched type of ordnance more like a first generation mortar bomb.

This ordnance could be launched from a land based launcher or from an aircraft by the schlachtstaffel air crew. It was highly effective bit of gear. A good picture of the thrower for this type of ordnance is displayed at the following site
