An interesting morning
Left CPBA at sparrows for my first fish of the year. What an eventful morning, headed out to a favourite area some 20nm west of Garden Island. Found some great show on the sounder so, whilst rigging up a couple of rods dropped the only one that was ready. Instant hook up but a gold spot sweet lip was not something I wanted so quick release and motor back to the start of the drift. Hmmmmmm, not motoring anywhere, whilst all the boat electrics were operating the motor and guages were dead. Nothing. Quick call to Marine Rescue Cockburn who heard me despite the distance I was out and was told it will be a while to get crew together and get out to me. sea anchor out to slow the drift from the co-ords I had given. Oh well ground looks ok drop a bait or two while waiting. Actually dropped three, a mulie, occy, and one of those weird lead heads with plastic occy. Instant triple hookup, all of which turned out to be those rare and endangered dhu, 5, 7 and a fat fat 10. The 5 quickly returned and swam off strongly. Then had a boring 45 minute wait for Avail and the crew.
Thanks again for the great service MRC Brett and crew
Thanks to one of our sponsors, Luke at Chivers Marine arranged for a technician to meet me at the ramp so we could tilt up the motor using an auxiliary power supply direct to the trim motor ...... now that's service !

A tow in from 20nM out
Wouldn't be my worst nightmare but it would be up there in rough weather. I was out around that distance from Bunbury on Saturday in a howling easterly that would have made a tow in an exciting proposition.
Good job on the dhueys.

Yup a win
Found some new and VERY productive ground a little further out from my favourite area. Free tow home as operational member of MRC and was quite surprised that even that far out they could still hear me. Thankful I didn't head out to the fads as I toyed with the idea in such light winds early.

Few fish make it a top day
Few fish make it a top day still surely :) had very similar..first drift 70m of water then nothing..fk.
Was mid week and a glass off..2 meter plus swell but still a smooth 2 hr trip home under tow. Mine was the power relay so everything turning over but fuel pump not engaging.
2005 Opti has 3 relays, there all the same, power, tilt up, tilt down. Just needed to swap them around...had I known.

Whilst I am an active radio op for MRC
I am also a paid up member......$10 annual fee......bluntly cheap as!
As a non member we seek a donation ( a letter sent out a few days after the tow) but it is entirely at the boat owners discretion ....$50 is common and for longer tows or larger boats $100 .

Thats pretty damn
Thats pretty damn good!
Fremantle Sea Rescue assisted us on dads yacht a few years back. Coming under the bridges in fremantle, winding up the 70ft mast, the motor conked and the seabreeze / incoming tide started us drifting back to the railway bridge.
I called Sea rescue and whilst we argued what channel the best one was to talk on, a passing launch took a tow line and got us half way to the museum where we were handed over to sea rescue.
They towed us from the Fremantle harbour to Fremantle Sailing club and asked for a $500 donation for that service.

..Yep freo ask well overs
..Yep freo ask well overs compared to Cockburn.
Ive had a deep sea trip returned by Cockburn $200...had a small trip of freo, shipping channel and still requested $200.
Its not binding, but I always see it as good karma before returning to the water to settle the amount.

Nar mate, left from Leeuwin Sunday.
Only had the 1 tow home since putting the Merc on, quite a few issues with the old Johnno though before that.

Cheap as
Well worth the yearly membership then, but $100 donation for a tow in is dirt cheap still for those who are not members. Particularly when you consider the cost of having a car towed these days and the much more serious nature of being stuck at sea than on the side of the road.
Great service from MRC and Chivers!

Great service from MRC
Good to hear that all ended well on the day for you Gordon. I've been a member of Fremantle MR for many years but have also recently joined joined MRC as an affiliate member as they're my local group. All the rescue groups provide a fantastic service to us boaties and should be supported wherever possible.

Totally agree which is why I am a radio op for them
And do relief overnight radios for both Freo and Cockburn when asked. Many might not realise that the radios are manned 24/7 so no matter what time of day or night you can call for help. I just wish more boaties would have the common sense to log on and off.
as an aside, Yamaha control box major short, has to be replaced, and guages then non compatible so they need replacement as well.....just short of $7G....ouch

Unfortunately not
If it had caught fire then yes but I am probably glad it didn't. you can buy mechanical damage insurance but it is prohibitively expensive

Leccy faults
Its a sobering read for most on car and 4 wd insurance too .... they basically never cover faults , as in mechanical , electrical , hyd etc etc ....
so if your driving down the road and your 100/ 200 /300 series cruiser sparks out thru no fault of yours, and burns to the ground your on your own ... ( its happened) ..

Given the motor has given 10 years of faultless service
And as a 225hp gives me fuel economy of 1nm a litre on a 6.8 seaquest then one issue in 10 years is pretty damned good......just a pity it is an expensive one.

Not good news about the cost
Not good news about the cost of repairs but in the long run you have had a good run out of it.
As far as donations to sea rescue , we got towed back in not long ago (split fuel line) and we got told any donations are now taxed as an income . Ended up donating 2 cartons of light to their up coming Xmas party
