Ipad marine & nav map/charts

FW crew...

Am looking at buying a tablet style whizbang thing to use for a few reasons but the one thing that I have heard that i like the sound of is being able to use them off the satelites as opposed to phone towers providing navigation pretty well anywhere anytime...

I`m yet to have this confirmed but i figured guys here would have done some research?

It seems you can download anything nowadays so if it is the case you can use them as a gps off the Satelites then I guess you can d/load the maps & charts.... Whats your thoughts guys anyone onto it?

Hi TimboonI have used an IPad

Hi Timboon

I have used an IPad with Navionics charts in Perth for about a year now

Great for navigation, but not so good with Waypoints.

Placement of a new waypoint is not so accurate and its easy to move a waypoint by mistake as it just a case of highlighting the waypoint and dragging, so, I broke down and got an HDS10 with navionics gold.

Just learning how to use it buts so far its been great

Need to still connect it to my Furuno Sounder so I can use the mark function

Eric

and iphones.

Used mine all the way to Singapore to keep up with where we were when off watch. Just couldnt get proper charts for outside Aus waters without buying another subscription.

Only advantage with being in wifi or 3G range is quicker triangulation from cold.

They're ok, but not that nice to use, and not at all waterproof. Good for backup only.

So in short fellas they can`t pick up and run off the satellites at all?

I wanted it mostly for outback type touring, i recently used a Hema mapping system ( top of the range ) and was well impressed with its acuracy even on small station tracks... I thought if you can get the similar programs and run an ipad it just becomes alot more versatile... Then if needed can be a back up type system for the boat??

I never intended to gain the accuracy purpose built chart plotters have, mostly for land based driving/exploring...
