It's all about exploring
Another day out exploring new ground. This time we ventured out past the anchorage for the ships to look around at some of the ground . Again we found the fish. Sandy got our first pilbara red , unfortunately it was a bit on the small size but love the color of them. Managed another good haul of blue lined emperor with a couple of big ones amongst them. Sandy found out first hand how hard the big catfish fight (kept for bait next trip). I hooked up while sorting that out and expecting to see a monster fish on the line going by the fight as it got close to the surface I had 1 trout on the top set of hooks (released straight away) and on the bottom set of hooks a nice trout and a blue lined emperor , my first triple hookup. Certainly surprised me . Ended up cruising in on 22 knots. Great day on new ground so we're going to explore a lot more building up our spots out from hedland

I stand to be corrected
But the largest emp is what I call a true spangled emperor, there is a subtle difference between a blue lined and a spanglie

First one is a spangled emperor and the one you are holding with the coral trout is a blue line emperor or black snapper. They are very similarThe blue line head is a bit elongated and the one you are holding is a good size Spangled emperor grow to double that size. The black snapper used to turn up at Carnarvon jetty sometimes and 450mm was a good size. The limit was 250mm not sure now

Black snapper
The one Sandy is holding is definitely a black snapper or blue line emperor, they sometimes lose their colour when you spike them

Definately all blue lines there. Better eating than spangos.

My understanding is they are also known as grassies and north west snapper. If you Google black snapper it comes up as grassie emperor

Yep, plenty of names, I use to call the tricky snapper in Darwin lol
Great eating as I prefer the big flakes to coral trout, everyone thought I was crazy as I would happily take the grassie's home at the end of the day when a few of us would head out.
