Its been 11 months since my last fish (said this recovering fishing addict at his first AA meeting (Anglers Anonymous)

 Hi All,

Long lost friends in the fishwrecked community, its been a while.... no I didn't get pulled over the side by a world record Dhufish and die a horrible death on the fabled spot known as "The Dropzone". Far from it, I have actually been exploring one of my other (newly re-aquired) passions in life... playing guitar.

As those that know me well would attest, I rarely do things in halves so about 4 years ago I bought a heap of equipment and set about learning to play again after a 25+ year abstinence. This past year I joined a band and jamming/rehearsing regularly took over my weekends, so fishing dropped right down the list. So much so that other than rain, my boat only got wet once last year in April.

Instead of the Fishwrecked-Reeltime magazine, I channelled my creative energies into creating a Youtube guitar cover page "Old Guitar Dad"

www.youtube.com/channel/UC1Ll1jres82nksM2B4c_iGg , (if anyone wants to check it out it has 50+ guitar covers on there now) in an atempt to give me the confidence to actually play in front of an audience for the first time ever. That was a few months ago now and yes I did subsequently play live a couple of times, which was super nerve wrecking, but enjoyable all the same.

Back to fishing: I am about to head up to Exmouth for 2 weeks fishing to break my 12 month fishing drought. I'm getting nervous as my fishing MOJO must be at an all time low.

We got a few marlin a couple of years ago and found a bit more productive ground which we will hopefully take a look see this year. I just checked my reels and thankfully they haven't seized up, so I may have a chance to rekindle my passion for fishing, having scratched the musical itch sufficiently this past couple of years.

Wish me luck, and hopefully we will re-aquaint with a couple of these fish from the last trip.

Youtube was a godsend in re-learning

Thanks Da pirate, until I discovered youtube guitar teachers I could barely string a couple of chords together. Whilst I am still very average, at least now I can play a few songs that I loved growing up. I tend to watch someone play online first to get an idea where on the fretboard to play then go to the guitar room and give it a go myself. It takes me a while to work it out but eventually I tend to get pretty close.

Theory

No I did that as an 11 year old and hated every minute of it. I used to catch the bus from Thornlie into town and do lessons at Musgroves in Murray st upstairs back in the early 70;s. Did it for a couple of years then stopped as soon as I was allowed to by my parents. They were teaching me classical while I wanted to play Led Zep, Stooges and the like. I played a little in my teens and bought my first electric back then, but sadly never spent any time on it as back then I was always playing soccer or fishing. My guitars stayed in the shed for over 20 years untouched until a mate I had shown a few chords to back in my late 20's decided to get a band together for his 40th (I was 50 at the time and hadn't played a note in 30 years). I had fun at the rehearsal and slowly my spare time spent reading every post on fishwrecked was gradually replaced by watching how to play "xyz" guitar videos on youtube.

I got the guitar bug and had so much fun playing songs from my youth that I haven't stopped since. I still avoid theory but know that to progress my playing to the next level I need to know a bit more (or at the least try and re-learn all the stuff I knew as an 11 your old that I have completely forgotten now.)

I'm hoping its just a temporary shift in my passions and I will find a balance between the two sooner rather than later, hence why this Exmouth trip is a bit of a must do.
