it's for real!

Monster croc shock

YES, it's real.

NT News photographer Katrina Bridgeford took this amazing front page photograph of Brutus, a 5.5m saltwater croc, giving a boatload of tourists a moment they'll never forget on the Adelaide River, just over 100km south of Darwin, last week.

Ms Bridgeford was on the cruise with sons Jordan, 14, and Dylan Woodward, 11, of Sydney, NSW, four-year-old niece Skye Bridgeford and boyfriend Daniel Wilson.

Son Dylan had only two words when the massive man eater rose out of the water in front of the group: "Holy crap!"

We've seen the picture in the camera. It's real. Have you seen similar monster crocs in the Top End?

The huge saltwater crocodile, which is missing its right front leg, is a favourite with tourists on the Adelaide River Cruises, because he loves his meal of buffalo meat and always puts on a good show for it.

I wasn't expecting anything like this. I couldn't believe how close it got to us. If you put your hand out, you would've touched it.

Jumping crocodile cruises are a major tourist attraction in the Territory with several operators providing their services along the croc-infested Adelaide River.

But Brutus doesn't always get it his own way.

Cruise operator Harry Bowman said the 80-year-old crocodile lost his front leg in a shark attack.

It must have been a hell of a big shark.

Only a matter of time before someone gets eaten out of the boat trolling the Adelaide.

I don't know Daisy. You hardly see a croc in there when fishing yourself. The crocs only appeared when the big thump of the diesel tourist boats came down the river.

Not many genuine ones that big. Best I saw might of just gone 5m. Even the big Shady Camp and Coroboree crocs barely make the 5m mark. Pretty easy to get excited and over estimate these things.

massively faked photo that one, where is the shadow off the croc onto the tourists, it's a very graceful exit from the water and the top half of the croc looks very dry to me, no water glowing off the body, such a sceptic i know

The croc does look dry, agreed but they do come out of the water quite gracefully and the people on the boat are all looking at the right height. That bad boys missing a front paw too!
