jetty combo?

im coming into about $400-$450 soon and was thinking of either an overhead or spin combo that will be mostly used for jettys like busso and rocks for salmon etc... was thinking stradic 4000 or 5000 with 20lb braid on a 8 or 9 footer. any better suggestions? would an overhead be better seeing as i would have acess to a boat every so often? i have posted before about this i was going to start buying gear for lb shark fishing so im caught between a rock and a hard place!

any input welcome especially from you jetty and rock specialists

the stradic should do the trick for both jetty and abit of boat work but i would match it with an 8ft rod and even use that for some beach fishing

IMO your after 2 different outfits. The Busso locals tend to use heavy handlines (good way to go) or a heavy boat combo. Around jetties targeting big fish you want some real power to dictate terms & a 20-30lb combo just ain't gunna cut it. You can use a lighter combo but forget about any really big fish. For a rock combo you have two options, firstly a lure throwing combo, then your 9ft rod with 5000 size reel is perfect but if you want to throw baits for big fish I'd go with a rod around 12ft & that can cast a big heavy bait. The lure combo I'd look at the FWA Exreme 9ft 6-10kg rod matched with a Stradic 5000fj & spooled up with 20lb braid. I just bought one of these rods the other day & can attest that they have plenty of power in the bottom section. I wouldn't go a shorter rod, the extra length will give you more casting distance & help you lift your catch up clear of the rocks. Down the line you can get a second 6-7ft barra style rod that would be easier to weild in a boat. The big bait outfit I'd look at a Saragosa 18000f matched up with something like the 13ft Daiwa Sensor Surf (20-40lb).

Fin-nor offshore spin reels

Wed, 2013-05-15 17:09

Fin-nor offshore spin reels are great value also!!! Huge amount of drag and around $150-$190 depending on size..  7500 OS would probably almost do you for both types but Id be a bit more inclined myself to go a bigger 8500..

Match it up with a shimano T-Curve ....  ;-)  Strong as f..k combo!!!

I got mine for $159 off the shelf from bluewater in Morley. Great rod for belting lures off the beach or rocks but also has no problem bait casting an unweighted mulie. Add a 5000fj & spool it up with braid & you will easily come in under $450. You won't get anything better for the money unless you look at secondhand.

 30-70g. You can belt a 70g

Wed, 2013-05-15 17:57

30-70g. You can belt a 70g twisty out full power no problem but it will cast down to about 15g pretty well if you have a good casting technique. The only thing I don't like is that there is no hard butt cap, the EVA goes right around the end of the butt & can get torn up pretty quick when you put the butt down on rough reef type rocks to rerig. I pulled a hard rubber cap off the steel frame of an old hammock I have (perfect fit) & used hot melt glue to fix it over the butt end, problem solved.

i recon mate for spinning i like a high speed reel on my 9ft just seemed to have more success on lures when i can get them moving a bit quicker wether it b salmon tailor or bonito my current 9 ft set up is a saltist4500 with 30lb power pro got at least400m on there and an old 6-10 kg starlo stick that i just cant seem to part with i also give this set up to the misses been nice and light to soak some baits and shes stopped some good bronzies to 4 foot off the rocks.ive also had the saltist on the boat on my 10-15kg snapper stick and it works great its got great drag and i'd b more than confordent about stopping a 15kg mulla of the beach with it rod wise i hear oceanside tackle has some nice 9footers in stock at the moment wich should keep u under budget

From memory I got about 280m

Wed, 2013-05-15 18:44

From memory I got about 280m of 20lb power pro on mine. Last I checked the 4500 saltist is around $265, you might get free postage depending where you got it from. Assuming you had to pay for postage & with the FWA rod that combo would come in right about $450 without braid. Pretty sure the 9ft rod Callum is talking about is the FWA job.

Shimano Catana's

Wed, 2013-05-15 20:45

I fish both with my lad and have used for a while now Shimano Catana's in 902, 702, and 682, matched to Sienna's 4000.

I bought them as cheap starting combos and the bloody things just won't break.! The rods are all 6-8KG and have landed everything from big Tuna, Sambos, Salmon and 10KG Dhuies. The reels run 20lb fins and have been smoked by Sharks, Rays, Macks and others. I've not ever serviced them (my bad) and they still keep on going. Lovely tailor set ups, still ok for herring, good all round tools. I've got a lot better gear but will often pick up the cheaper combos as I don't get so worried about abusing them on the jetty or getting sand all over them on them on the beach.

I think the 702 combo with a Sedona 4000 is $165 in BCF, Absolute bargain, abuse it and enjoy it !!!!!

i agree with the fact that the "cheaper" (if i can say that) shimano combs are very reliable. my 2500 is a shimano accort with a 3-6kg shimano sss rod and its tackled some runs from things that it should definately not be able to handle. would have loved to see what it was but line went ping! its brought in a 6kg occy pretty easily even though with full drag the line was still pulling.

 Possibly a T-Curve Salt

Wed, 2013-05-15 21:25

Possibly a T-Curve Salt Water spin 5-10kg and a stratic 4000 (or 5000). Easily handle big fish, mine has caught good tuna, Gummy sharks, rays, tailor, spanglies and stuff like that. My mate has got a 80kg shark on his. Great all round combo at 7'.

Cheers

 if you specifically want to

Thu, 2013-05-16 00:18

if you specifically want to target sharks from land get a lever drag overhead like a tld25 and match it with a gladiator or live fibre 15-24kg or 24-37kg lbg rod. Perfect lbg combo for big baits both dead and live. Doubles up as excellent heavier boat combo.
