JIGGING FOR SNAPPER/DHU
Submitted by Sam57 on Thu, 2015-02-05 15:02
Having had only limited sucess fishing with bait for dhu/snapper (mainly undersized) I am keen to give jigging a crack, question ? do you still burly up or just move around watching sounder for signs.
Thanks for any info.

I would still suggest you to
I would still suggest you to berley up. Just make sure the berley is small enough to entice but not enough to feed them until they are full.
Berleying will bring the fish closer to the vicinity you are jigging so you stand a better chance of getting them on jigs.
As a deckie I always jig amongst bottom bashes who berley heavily before they drop the bait. I reckon my chances of snagging a fish on jig goes up 2 fold if the baiters are around, compare to just dropping my jig alone.
It's be a good confidence booster.
Once you start getting fish consistently on jig and your confidence is up, commence to jig without berleying.

Eric your experience is very
Eric your experience is very different to mine then!
Maybe it is just psychological but I always feel I never do as well on jig when there's baiters nearby as the bait draws them away from the jig.
Also have never tried to burley while jigging, as I never jig at anchor
For me it is always a case of find the fish or likely structure on the sounder, then drop a jig down there. Repeat.
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.
