Ask for servicing invoices to
Ask for servicing invoices to see if it has been serviced - preferably annually and check these for any work or notes out of the ordinary (problems reported etc.).
Also ask how often he flushes it and how he flushes it.
Not always the case but my concerns would be that a motor that has not done much work can sometimes be worse than one that has been run on a regular basis despite looking good on the outside. i.e. not run regularly tends to end up with the impellor becoming hard and brittle which can if not changed result in other damage (to pump/overheating etc). Also less use can lead to carby/s becoming clogged/blocked with varnish or allow corrosion to set in.
May pay to get a professional checkover/compression test once you are about to make the final call on it (which you should ideally do with any second hand motor)

Had the exact model
on my Trailcraft 540 up in karratha ( 2002 115Hp). As expected it is/was smoky and noisy. Had no issues apart from one no start, but was a simple fix.
However after upgrading to a Etec 115 will never ever go back to old technology.
How many hours and service history I would check.
Nobody sells anything saying " I thrashed the shiite out off it every weekend ", so Caveat emptor for sure.
And I fully agree with Paul above with checks.
PS: Injured my Johno when the boat fell off the trailor(thats another story and a half), damaged the gear box, so hope its not in Karratha!!!

Smoky and noisy - pretty
Smoky and noisy - pretty typical of a Johnno but they aren't too bad a motor apart from that.
Found running penrite low smoke 2str oil (or other good quality oil) in mine made it a "bit" less smoky. Not running out of fuel (change tanks if needed before this happens) and having good fuel lines (no leaks) is the other trick (otherwise pumps more oil in to compensate for lack of fuel on oil injected models)
Funny Dad dropped ours on the ramp once too but no damage to the motor and just a bit of rash on the back of the (glass) hull.
4 stroke for me now and yep no going back too :-)

hey, have a 2002 Johno ocean
hey,
have a 2002 Johno ocean pro....135 though Has been an Extremely relialbe motor. (never and failure or no start)
have had it 8 years.
only problems over those 8 years- thermostat on one of the v's went causing it to idle a bit rough.....$200 fix. (about 4-5 years ago)
I get mine serviced very regularly and am very particular about he oil I run.
as others have said they are smoky when first started (if you leave them for a while) fine after running for 2 mins. ......and they are thirsty.
for me reliability is the key factor on any OB purchase.

Thirsty and smoky but doesn't miss a beat. Only problem been the trim and tilt switch went 10 mile on the way out in once so had to get the decky to hold the switch on the motor whilst under way to stop it trimming up. He hot wet haha

Was it the tilt/trim switch
Was it the tilt/trim switch itself or blown relays
- Not 100% sure on that model but pull the engine cover off - on the driver's side there should be 2 relays (3cmx3cm square black things) one above the other just in from the rear, pull them both out. These are the tilt trim relays likely one of these went.
Then on the passenger side of the motor down on the mount there will be a hole to stick a screw driver through to a screw, should have manual release stamped on the mount. unscrew a turn or two. the put downward pressure on the motor and it will start to lower
once prop in in water driving forward steadily will get it down more. once down tighten release screw back up and away you go until you get back to ramp. If need to raise at ramp stick relays back in until at the height and then take them out again.
I used to carry spare relays but my new motor has a relay module (specific part).

Good to know. The marine mechanic replaced the switch in the throttle control which he said was the problem. Pulling the relays certainly would have been alot easier

The specs plate you can see
The specs plate you can see (just next to the loop of black hose) will have the year on it (may be coded but from memory these have the actual year).
The black hole on this side about half was down the mount is the hole for the manual release of the tilt/trim as per the post above (all motors should have this around this spot). If you look into the hole you'll see the screw inside - good to know where it is before heading out.

My first guess would be around 2005/6 model (at the latest but they could have done the same ones earlier)
Edit - just found one which appears to be a 2003 so possible they were building them in 2002 and up until 2006

Mine consumes fuel with vigour, blows plenty of smoke, (now running XD 100 full synthetic, a bit better but still smoky on the start up) has also blown the tilt relay (easy and cheap fix) I also did the coil box as well a few years ago. Cost more to locate the problem (hrs) than to replace the part. Other than that it goes well. Apparently the short shaft model of these is still a semi sought after motor.
