Snapped cable steer thinking of going hydraulic - advice please
Submitted by Adonis on Mon, 2014-02-24 12:39
Hey guys, went out on Sunday and the cable on the steering snapped before I got to the first fishing spot, pissed off was an understatement.
I can afford to go hydraulic although I am a tight arse I was going to just replace the cable, however after reading a bit I think i'll be going hydraulic. I have an 18 footer with a 80 yami 4 stroke, any recommendations on what brand and where to get one installed in perth or are they relitively easy to install?
Any help would be great.
Cheers,
Pete

I would recommend chivers
I would recommend chivers marine to do the work, however being such a good workshop I know they have considerable wait times to get your boat in. They are not too hard to install and worth every cent! After you get it fitted you will wonder why you didn't do it years ago. No more snapped cables!

Chivers is the go.
They have a display of a range of types and models. Between $850 & $1200 will buy you everything you need. How do I know, just been there and enquired on your behalf.

Turning circle
One thing you will find with hydraulics is from lock to lock there are far more turns of the steering wheel to encounter, for people just open water fishing all well and good, but if you creek fish in tight areas you will need time to adjust. I have a Hydrive and certainly haven't had any problems since installation, but when i first changed over ( 8 years ago ) i was confounded with the problem of chasing bait in small creeks in the Kimberley where i had gone from a cable system being 1 &3/4 turns lock to lock too 5 turns lock to lock. I have dealt with this by putting a forklift speed wheel on my steering and that has helped a lot.
In summary if fitted well they should give you a lifetime of hassle free boating. In my case just for example i had a pod that interferred with how far the engine would tilt, this cost me $ 700 extra in labour. Get a quote that you are happy with before fitting, as your wife will be wanting more jewellry ETC if she finds out you have gone over budget. Good luck.

Hey guys thanks for the
Hey guys thanks for the advice. I did a bit of research and ended up going a hydrive bullhorn OBkit1 with the honda mount (apparently you have to use the honda kit for yami 4 bangers 80-100hp).
Anyway smashed it in about 3 hours, piece of cake. Glad my boat mechanic never called me back as I would never pay someone to install one of those kits after just doing it. Steering feels soooooo much smoother, glad I went hydraulic.
