E-tec 300 Hour Service

After purchasing my boat late last year with 180 hours on the clock, the 90hp E-tec is now nearing its 300hr service - I think that is a good thing but not sure about the missus.  After doing a bit of research, it seems that the 300hr service is the major one and a mate in the Pilbara indicated he was quoted over $900 to do it up there - he is a mechanic and could buy the software and parts for about $250 and do it himself.

Could anyone advise their experience with this service?  Particularly, who would be best north of the river in Perth to do it?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

...for around $500 at 270 hours (also a 90 etec); that was by a Mandurah mechanic who originally fitted it to my boat when he worked at an Evinrude dealer and then branched out for himself.

Given his location, he's obviously not handy for you but it does indicate that you shouldn't be paying $900.

Servicing on either cars or

Servicing on either cars or outboards has always been a bit of a rort in my mind (particularly dealership servicing). Shop around and you should be able to get a better price.

E-tec should be done for false advertising on their claim re 300 hour first service, what they neglect to tell you is this is only if used in fresh water. It is otherwise annually if used in salt. Wonder how many e-tec owners are unaware of this and without warranty cover as a result -
