Johnston St boat ramp Mosman Park - ramp damaged

Hi Everyone

I recently used the above ramp and found that it was damaged as it was missing about 6 concrete blocks in the middle at the back of the ramp.

Has anyone else used the ramp and found it to be in this condition and if so did you happen to advise the Mosman Park council or has it been this way for ages.

Does anyone know if there are plans to repair it as it wasn't that much fun getting a 6.4m boat & trailer back out even with a 4WD.

Note the drop off in the section missing the blocks was about 15cm but if someone has driven onto trailer recently this could easily blow out to 25 or 30cm which may be enough to bottom out your trailer frame or axle/s and duplicate the result below.

Thanks

Regards
Gezzza

What is a small vessel

Thu, 2016-09-22 15:16

It is only a plate ali boat and when compared to the ones in the background at Freshwater Bay YC it is small.
How does one determine small?
Thanks guys.

Drive 10 mins around to the ramp at Matilda Bay next to RPYC.

Best ramp on the river.

I've enquired with the Mossy

Thu, 2016-09-22 18:56

I've enquired with the Mossy council regarding this ramp and pending upgrades and there is a shitfight between them and Peppy Grove in that Peppy Grove believe none of their residents use the ramp so not only don't want to increase the parking on their side they also want to remove the existing parking facilities on their side. There is also an issue with sand washing over the ramp and they cannot build a protective wall because of age old moorings of which the owners of some of them are unknown.

Cheers Jackfrost80

Do you happen to know when you spoke to Mosman Park Council and who you spoke with. Was the ramp damaged at the time (as in my photos) when you spoke with them, or was it that it was continually silting/sanding up.

I have added some new photos of ramp and what happened to my trailer due to falling into the hole in the ramp.

Ouch!

Cheers

Yep I think your trailer was already cactus before that. Proably a good thing breaking there than somewhere remote. No penetration in those welds either so you were losing the race from the start. Not sure if they were an after market repair as most of those cross memebers are cold formed.

The trailer is in fantastic condition for its age as determined by my remote camera inspection of the trailer frame prior to me purchasing the vessel. The cross members were made that way back when this trailer was made by the manufacturer as all three are the same and the manufacturer has confirmed this was their manufacturing method. The cross members were mitred and then welded together. Today most manufacturers now cold form their cross members as confirmed by my trailers manufacturer. I can assure you it was the hole in the ramp as I heard it go bang the day it broke.

Hi I am just wondering if anyone has used the ramp during October or do you know if it is still open to the public

Matilda Bay is much better

Sat, 2016-10-29 20:46

Honestly mate, that ramp is not suitable for large trailer boats.

As i mentioned above, the ramp at Matilda Bay next to Royal Perth Yacht Club is much better.  In fact I'd say it's probably the best ramp on the river.

Yeah, MB ramp for sure!

Matilda Bay is probably the best ramp for launching around "central". Further up the swan, Maylands ramp is also great!

I will check out the MB ramp next time I am in the area. Just have to sort out trailer first as it is currently buggered.

It was, until I used the ramp

Tue, 2016-11-01 21:03

The trailer was fine until I used the ramp. It got busted at the ramp due to the condition of the ramp.

Thanks for the offer.

There is no point just welding it and cold galvanising it as it will just rust out from the inside in a few short years due to the exposed steel.

 Yep, you don't have many

Tue, 2016-11-01 21:10

Yep, you don't have many options apart from repairing with a new section and regalving the whole trailer if you want it to last.

Ramp is getting worse

Thu, 2017-07-13 13:29

Was down at the ramp recently for the prawning season and it has broken down even further. This time I went and had a good look in the water before rolling the trailer back.

Still useable but even more hazardous.

Here's the reply I got from

Thu, 2017-07-13 13:56

Here's the reply I got from the Town of Mosman Park back in Jan 2015. I don't expect anything has changed since then...

It is a pretty long story, so I will just give you the short version. As you already alluded to, the Town is aware there are issues with the boat ramp, and right you are, we have also budgeted to have some works done. Now here is where it gets interesting in regards to sand, an upgrade, and the parking.

On the Sand issue, the currents move all the sand from underneath the wall along the river north, which then submerges the boat ramp. The plan was for us to use a long reach excavator to dredge the sand and then run it back along the wall to help stabilise it [as you might know it is collapsing in parts]. Two issues with this: firstly this isn’t a permanent fix, and when the idea of a permanent ‘groyne’ was raised to prevent it happening all over again, the residents wanted blood, so that solution was out the window.
Secondly it turns out that our section 18 approval from the Department of Aboriginal Affairs [DAA] doesn’t include dredging, or that section of the boat ramp/foreshore to our boundary. While there is also a cost associated with the dredging, this can be accommodated in budget, but we simply don’t have approval to fix this at the moment, and are working through this with DAA. So without approval, the sand has to stay for the time being.

Onto the upgrade, initially the Town looked at extending the ramp, so that the ramp itself would function like a groyne, and the grade would be shallower for vehicles and boats to launch without rapid sand build-up. After discussions with the Swan River Trust [SRT], and the Department of Transport [DoT] it turns out there are moorings and channel markers just off the end of the ramp, which are unlikely to get relocated because they are under a long term ‘historic’ lease and there apparently isn’t enough room to relocated them.
DoT believes if we were provided with the info to who are essentially the owners of these morrings, they would not likely give them up, which they will have to do as DoT won’t approve any relocation. The cost of upgrade would be substantial and the Town currently doesn’t have the money to pay for this. Even if it were going ahead, and would rely on application to SRT for additional funds. That being said we are still trying to work through this with other designs [dog legs etc] which are with DoT for comment as we speak which may avoid these issues.

Finally the parking issue. This is probably the most tricky, you see the parking there, on the northern side at least, is within the Shire of Peppermint Grove. The actual boundary for the two councils runs almost right through the middle of the island at the top of the ramp. This means that only two bays [if you could call them bays?] left of the island when looking from the river are the only ones within Mosman Park. This has become an ongoing headache, where the Shire of Peppermint Grove is wanting to close the entry from Johnston Street onto Lilla Street, and making it either a cul-de-sac or left out only with the look to convert all those parallel bays to more numerous 90 degree bays. This, along with plans to mark up car bays along Johnston Street west of Lilla St, would mean that there would be essentially no boat / trailer parking in the area.

We are of course objecting to this, and this probably highlights an example that reform might solve. We’ll also request parking changes with the Shire of Peppermint Grove, however they seem less than amicable with regard to the boat ramp, as when we requested for financial contribution, we were met with a response outlining their residents don’t actually use the boat ramp and therefore have no vested interest or requirement to assist.

So in summary the Town is applying for approval to do the dredging and re-habilitating the wall, the boat ramp upgrade proper may be a bridge too far and might not happen in the foreseeable future, the Town is objecting to proposals to close Lilla Street, and will request review of their parking to assist the public use the boat ramp – in any way, shape or form.
