app is all good for the boat, but i'd grab a chart to do your homework if you want an idea of a new area... or chart software for your computer, DOT have a chart from Hill river to Fishermans island i think and they're all very detailed. Might be just me but it does my head in trying to get a good understanding of a large area through a screen only a few inches across, with a paper chart its all laid out in front of you.
I would definitely advise against going up there without a chart of some description, in my opinion you need one for navigating your way through the reefs out of the bay. I'm not familiar with the Navionics phone/ipad app but if it shows your current position on the map and the map is like what you get on boat GPS units, albeit smaller, then that would be perfect.
If you are planning to stay in close that should be all you need. If you are planning to head further out then it's really not that dissimilar to the metro waters NOR - once you get past the reefs it's relatively flat ground until you get to the banks which are 15 to 20kms out. A DOT chart will allow you to pick starting points out there.

Get an android or iphone/ipad
Get an android or iphone/ipad and install navionics app on it (As long as it has inbuilt gps)
Mark out some likely spots beforehand and take the device up with you onto the boat.
It'll at least give you half a chance

There are a couple available
I'm working from memory here but I think one goes from Perth to about Dongara, and there is also a large scale one for just the Jurien area.

Another vote for navionics app easy to use far cheaper than a chart .
