Jurien FADS

Gday Guys,
I am considering a trip up to Jurien in 1-2 weeks time for a few days.
Anyone have any reports on the FADS?
Are they still deployed? Any fish around?
Thanks

Is there any reason why they dont last? I mean, surely its not that differcult or uber expensive to make something that will stick around?
Or is it? Im sure some places have deep fads that they dont have to retrieve?

They cost
somewhere in the vicinity of $2500 plus a heap of volunteer absorbed cost and time.
It was a pretty big effort getting them out in the first instance and would require a similar commitment and funding to repeat.

Budget vs nature
Basically it costs too much to design a FAD that won't need replacement or regular maintenance in some form. In the open ocean of WA we have a near constant barrage of wind and swell. The heavier the chain you use, the bigger the buoy has to be and the bigger the loads become so costs tend to spiral upwards pretty quickly. And then if a shackle wears loose, someone's braid cuts through the rope, some idiot moors to the buoy or a ship hits all of the money invested in the FAD is lost because it is too deep to retrieve anything. There is a limit on the size of the system you can install with the volunteer vessels available anyway without damaging the vessel or endangering the deck crew.
A program of regular maintenance is probably more cost effective than making an "indestructable" FAD, but vessel costs for something which can pull a decent FAD anchor are still pretty huge if not done by volunteers with diesel to burn. . With mother nature being what she is, we might get a run of two weeks of big fronts and lose the FAD anyway.
