Just found a really great safety idea for rockfishing.
For some time i have been thinking of ways to harness myself to the rocks that actually comfortable and professional rather than rope around the waist.
While walking through the warehouse at work i spotted the best idea yet and i honestly thing that this is a definite life saver and brilliant idea that we should look into!!!!!
Would like some input off everyone and people who have used or currently use it.
What it is basically a seatbelt and retractor with heavy duty harness clips on each end.
The guys at work who operate the hi lift forklifts have to wear one incase while up high they fall off. . Looks comfy and i like how it retracts so while rock fishing it wouldn’t be laying around to trip over like a normal harness.
My idea would be to have decent steel posts fixed at places like salmon holes, Quobba , steep point (in the dangerous areas) with a eyelet
Fisherman buy one of these with the harness to wear just walk up clip it to the post then there harness and bobs your uncle. If you slip , fall, or get washed in it will lock into place and all is good.
Surely it would be a great idea.
Please offer comments yay or nay but was a rock fisherman that’s fished the most dangerous places in W.A i thinks its a mint idea. Here is a picture of it....

The art of fishing consists of casting, winding, trolling and jigging
while freezing, sweating, swatting and swearing.

The only holdback on this one
The only hold back on this one is im not sure of the length of the belt but i can seriously see this as a option around the place.
If it is i really dont know who to contact to get this idea off the ground

A purpose built one that goes
A purpose built one that goes longer would be good.
You cant compare price to you life though. Comfort could be worked on. No chance of being washed out , worse you would get is a few bruises and lost bark

Fall arrest harnesses have
Fall arrest harnesses have to go under your crotch (or rather around your upper thigh) because if you fall feet first, there's a reasonable chance you could slip out. At least for falls at height. In a rock fishing situation where you're more likely to slip then I would imagine the harness would get stuck at your arm pits.
If you call nobles and ask about "retractable lanyards" they should be able to help you. However I think moving around a lot might end up with it locking at annoying times.
With a proper comfortable harness (rock climbing or personnel fall arrest) would a rope be a problem? (Preferably you'd want a dynamic climbing rope but they're $$$$).

I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

Problems
Hey i don't want to rain on your parade but i can see some problems with this idea.
1 Councils or shires would only be able to install these if they were tested and rated and then you would need a nationally acredited working at heights ticket to use them otherwise they would be held liable for any injuries you may get while using them.
2 The cost would be exessive. You also need to have all working at heights equipment inspected every 6 months.
There are so many regulations that cover the installation and use of working at heights equipment it would make it unviable.
I think it's a great idea just too many hurdles to jump to make it work.

I originally thought that the
I originally thought that the shire could put something up but exposed to salt waterover even a short time would kill it not to mention idiots stealing or damaging them
If the shires put up just a fixture like a pole or anchor points into the rocks we could buy our own to take there. Nothing would fall back on the shires etc. Most places now are gettting anchor points so it would be something we could buy to take along.

anchor points
There are already many installed down south Marc. I believe they are drilled then chemi anchored and tested on a regular basis
Ray Walker and his group of merry men have been on a mission for years.
I am sure there is a list detailing the locations. Will ask

Responsibility
The reason councils don't put the anchor points in is that they are then responsible for maintaining them and if something goes wrong, in deep shit, so they sit on their hands and wait for blokes like Ray and Recfish to install them

Just remember that this type
Just remember that this type of inertia reel is for a vertical aplication only i.e. it needs a certain velocity to lock up the webbing. In a horizontal situation this may not happen if you are not traveling fast enough. Have you thought about a simple static rope with a belaing device or even a simple prussik loop or cats paw?

Great idea. Some of the older
Great idea. Some of the older types of these inertia reels won't retract if they are not above the wearer. Miller make small versions that do though.
