Halco twister 20g
Submitted by Tchampney on Mon, 2013-08-12 08:22
As the weather being quite terrible for the boat lately, I've been heading down to my local beach (secret harbour) for around an hour each afternoon. I've just been going down with 1 rod casting a halco 20g twister into the white wash and retrieving it. I've had no luck! Do these work off the beach? Am I doing something wrong?

Twistys are one of my go to
Twistys are one of my go to lures, use them heaps off the rocks/beach round injidup. 20gm is great off the rocks, usually go 40gm or bigger in the surf. Try givin it a hard lift, then wind every now and then. The change up in the retrieve normally gets the tailor interested.

20g will mostly go unnoticed
20g will mostly go unnoticed by tailor in whitewater, 55g is the best size but 40g will do if that's the most your gear can cast. Forget the gold at the moment, it's produced nothing for me all winter, chrome is the only way to go. Don't always wind flat out, try half speed every second cast. Far more fish have come for me this season on the slower retreive. Look for whitewater over reef preferably with deep water (holes or gutter) under the foam. Tailor love these kinds of places to wait & ambush unsuspection prey. Be persistent, tailor usually travel through in schools & often will only be where your fishing for a few minutes at a time. That might mean a hundred casts for nothing, then two casts for two fish then nothing again until the next school comes along, if another school comes along.
Just because I smile & nod does not mean I believe the crap coming out of your mouth.

Iv never caught tailor out of
Iv never caught tailor out of wash, never really tried much. We just troll for them along beaches and inshore reefs. I used to use (have a better option now) a gold or chrome 15g twisty for this. The lures would work for us by trolling at the right speed so the lure skips along the surface nicely, a high ratio reel should make it easier to achieve this action with cast and retrieve, and I suppose avoid a 'wangy' glass rod, a light, but stiffer graphite option will avoid the lure having unwanted action aswell as deliver posative action to the lure with your input to the rod, thats with all lure fishing. When the tailor are on they hit anything anyhow, a 5 dollar slice on a kmart combo will catch fish as will a stella and samurai combo with a 40 buck jap lure so dont be discouraged, they may not be there or feeding. I found that when the water was dirty, it is harder to get fish with lures due to poor visibility. The twisties become more visible when the sun is out. On overcast days we would have more success with the chrome

Take not that Raider slices
Take not that Raider slices are over stating the weight.
Bought a couple from Big W the 40g only weights 30g and the 65g only weights 50g.
So bear this in mind if you want to max out your lure weight that your rod can take to get distance.
Listen to CityFlicker, he knows what he's doing. I consulted him and caught my PB tailor at 47cm. Not big at all but a start!

Big W mate I just stocked
Big W mate I just stocked up, twistys and raiders for half the price, amazing how tackle shops can justify selling the twistys for $10, maybe 8 but not 10. Any ways forget my rants :D I'm a big believer of the humble twisty, it's accounted for my pb tailor and many a hez and pike have fallen to its tempting glint, keep persevering champ and you'll come good

never rated the simple
never rated the simple shiney bit of steel until I started tossing a 40gm gold twisty from the beach at ningaloo! Pretty much now my surf predator go-to lure! Everything to macks, queenies, all the trevally species, jacks, tailor, everything. Even caught sharks and spanglies on em.
A great lure that everyone should have in the tackle box

Love the twisty. One of my
Love the twisty. One of my favourite Tailor lures by far. Gold or silver from 30g up. Although I have heard of some people from jetties using the 10g ones but I've never given them a try. I wish I had of know of the Kmart sale, I generally lose one at least a day when fishing for tailor. Usually after I've been fishing for a while and the fish go deep Ill try and let the lure sink deeper and deeper until bye bye twisty .

Twisties the king
There is a difference between twisties and slices. More action and bubbles from the twisty. It has the curved tips. I reckon a bit of red makes all the difference. Red tag on split ring or reflective red sticker. 10 grammers for hezza after hezza and like the people above say, 30 and up for tailor.
Get yourself some richter plugs too. They great tailor lures. The more they get chewed the better the action gets I reckon. I think you'll be pushing it to score off secrets this time of year regularly though. I live in Madora and fish here often. No structure makes it hard, the fish always on the move. A berley trail can help but that negates the walk. I sometimes take a bit of streak oil, dip the lure and throw thirty oily casts in the one hole. That has produced for me before. Feels a bit like cheating with bait though...On the calmer days, let it sink to the bottom for as long as you can bear it, retrieve and pause etc.
Slightly different but same theme, I have been trying to catch a tailor on a popper here for 7 years... Had em boiling on the surface.... lots of hezzas etc but never a tailor on a traditional popper.... yet.
Good luck.
