Kalbarri lure choices

Hi All,

Will be heading to Kalbarri for the first time and wish to fish on artificials only.

Can someone recommend some lures to use at Kalbarri -either on surf or muchinson river ? I don't care what I can catch (except blowies of course) so long as they are caught on artificial. We do have a small boat which will be used in the river.

My search on the forum reveals that possible fish caught includes the following:

  • Bream
  • Finger mark snapper
  • mulloway
  • tailor
  • giant herring

I did a search and realise that lots of mulloways are caught on bait. Can they be caught on lures in the surf ? If so, what type or genre of lure ?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

P/s: are blowies an issue over there ?

Thanks

richtor plugs for tailor anysize but the white ones seem to work the best on a fast retrive! soft plastics for bream in river. small bucktail jigs for the herring. good luck with the mullas on plastics only ever got one on a plug at chinamans in the mouth but that was years ago now. bait is gona be your best option for the mullas!

Thanks tangles. Will keep that in mind. All my richter plugs are in whites so all good!

Is the river very snaggy ? Was hoping to use the bigger hardbodies for MJ & fingermark & estuary cod if they are around.

can be depends where you go. would forget about the fingermark. if you are landbased going up river around gregory rock or paradise flats is awsome for bream and giant herring early mornings or late arvo into the night. some good muddies up there as well.

the area just east of the boat pens on the south side of the river is pretty rocky n snaggy but until you get up around the otherside of castle rock you should be right. flicking lures around the boat pens will get you into some nice bream, javlin fish and mangrove jacks! but they will do you up pretty quick if your drag isnt locked up.
