Kalbarri trolling
Submitted by tim-o on Tue, 2012-01-17 18:23
Planning on headn up to Kalbarri over the oz day weekend for a family campin trip and goin to drag the lil 15 ft runabout up with me so just after any advise on targeting big tailor and possibly some larger pelagics as Iv heard theres good action not too far off the coast. Just after advise on general locations and times/tides and when its a nono to attempt exiting the mouth (swell height/tide) might even bottom bash if I get desperate.

15ft boat might be a bit
15ft boat might be a bit hairy especially if not familliar with conditions. If in doubt skip it or wait till somebody else goes through and follow them. Watch weather report closely, can get very hairy offshore there that time of year.

Like locally I wouldnt 'head
Like locally I wouldnt 'head out' unless theres bugger all swell and little wind obviously so if it isnt favourable Im happy huggn the coast trolling for tailor like here or stick to the river. Im just after someone with local knowledge or some inside info so i can make the most of atleast one trip on the blue stuff instead of hunting around

Im not going to get into the whole going through the river mouth...common sense and a look at the weather will let you know when you can get through. Ive gone through it 100 times in a tinnie. Anyways head due west of the river mouth til ya hit the 30m line then troll north south vise versa. Ya will ick up bait fish patches on sounder hang around em...heaps of mackies. Enjoy and dont stress about the mouth of the river. as the other guys said watch a coule boats first and remember once you commit go hard til ya through!

Thanks Joe thats what I was hopin for, a heads up to put me in the zone. I suppose low tide and less swell the better for exiting or coming back, Im sure the locals will be helpful. I just didnt want to be totally green headn up there.

You'll be fine just get back
You'll be fine just get back in before its shitty can get nasty those southerlies up there. Oh yeah the sand patch bout 8-10km north of the mouth is good for a troll to. You will be infront of the only sand dune without vegitation on it. Good for a bottom bounce as well...you owe me!

Yeah, figured it could be gd getn out in morn but comin in later is a diff story. Thanks Joe hope to have the luck conditions wise and give it a crack, gotta consider my deckies, the missus and me young bloke, only 2 years old otherwise Im sure trolling in the river close to the mouth should provide some talior on light gear, or a scenic tour up stream and hunt some bream.

Will you have a 4wd?
If the rivermouth is too nasty but conditions outside look ok, head south out of town ~40kms and beach launch in the lagoon at lucky bay? The reef wall has made a big lagoon (its got moorings for cray boats etc) with a good passage out to sea. Just launch off the sandy point and park up beyond the high tide mark and out of the way of other beach users.
I can give you more specifics if you need on how to get in to the area.

Hmm got a crv prob not the best option. Me mate might be joinin us up there so if I head out the mouth itl'll be just the two of us I think, Ill do the family fish on the river, Id have more confidence that way. I understand the swell surge as it hits frustrations reef mixed with tidal flow which is the drama, but can you troll the back of the reef once your out or better stay away, maybe me mate could cast at it as we're getting past, so keen to get a monster tailor.

if the channel is too rough
you can take your tinnie across the river, jump out and catch some big Tailor off the oysters reef at the mouth then putt back across the river safe n sound.
