Kimberleys's Advice!

Well, Scano and I and a couple others are putting together some ideas for planning a trip well north next year, and given none of us have been that far north was hoping the good people in the fishwrecked community can help with many unknowns we have. Our aim is tp spend a reasonable amount of time chasing Barra, jacks, muddy's, basically spend pleenty of time in the creeks, then spend a few days out in the blue chasing other northern species.

At this stage we are looking at taking 2 tinny's, 1 is a 4.6m side console, other is a 4.7m i think. Both very new

We are looking at heading to either Derby and surrounds, or Kunanurra and Whyndham. for 2-3 weeks from Perth. Derby is obviously fishing the fitzroy and Whymdham and Kunanarra will be the Ord, king river etc.

Few questions I've got for those who have been up to both places, live up there or are heading up there in the near future.

1. Whats the best time of year for Barra. From the research I've done, it looks like there are 2 times a year where generally the barra are at their most active. The run off and the start of the wet. Would i be correct in saying the run off is around March and the first wet is in September / October?

2. We plan on staying in towns mostly (wont be spending thr whole time off road), whats the accommodation like in Derby / Whyndham and Kunanarra? Most likely caravan parks / chalets etc.

3. Sand flies, are they likely to be an issue? (Not an issue for me, they dont seem to affect me) however Scano will get eaten alive!

4. roads, whats the roads up there like, especially between Derby and Kunanarra? We wont be taking the gibb river road, will go inland.

5. Places to fish on the way. Looking between Derby and Kunanarra and whymdam, are there rivers which hold barra?

6. Blue water fishing. Derby has King sound, whats the fishing like in there? Water conditions, whats it like travelling up the sound towards open water? Are there other boat ramps or places to launch around Derby?

7. Blue water fishing. Whyndham has Cambridge gulf, again whats the fishing like in the Gulf? Looking over the charts both King sound in Derby and the Cambridge gulf, its long distances to get out of these waters, any info on travelling up them?

Thats a few questions to get me started, anything anyone else can think of, want to add, need to know information would be greatly appreciated. Obviously crocs are also to be wary of up there!

Thanks

Bodie

Derby

Mon, 2016-04-18 22:01

Spent a few days fishing Derby as this was the start of a 9 week trip.
The sound is fairly shallow from memory and quite dirty with large tides. I mean really large tides.
We fished the neaps and it was July/Aug.
Lots of muddies in the creeks, caught a few jewies and golden snapper in the sound, but you need to find structure and there ain't much of it, just bloody mud, all the fish we caught in an hour and then the current was too much.
Chased the barra in the creeks but got mainly threadies.
Stayed at the caravan park in Derby, was ok and had no dramas -we stayed in tents.
We then chased Barra inland of Derby,Telegraph pool was the main one, beautiful spot to troll and use livies. Caught quite a few barra here, plus a couple of metery's.
We fished Kunanurra at the end of the trip, should have spent more time there.
Stayed at the caravan park for two days and camped for four on the ord. Thats a beautiful river and full of fish.
Went for a sneaky night fish at the crossing and absolutely smashed the cherabin with a great feed and had a ball dropping them into the rapids for some quality barra.
Also lost the biggest barra of my life boatside on the ord as we were just stunned at the size of it.
If you want to know anymore, pm me if you want.

Be very careful of saltwater ctocs as they are found in fresh water pools also

Wyndham fishing

Tue, 2016-05-03 19:53

Can be very good, but you really need to  know the area. There is no bluewater out of wyndham unless your prepared to travel 150km straight out of the gulf, water is generally brown and then turns greenish around lacrosse island on neap tides.

With the size of your boats the lower ord is worth a shot from mambi  boat ramp and below again river is shallow and they is few rock bars around.

Depending on fuel capacity if fishing from Wyndham the closest rivers are parrys, king and the durack, but like the ord watch the tides because you can get stuck in some of these rivers on low tide.  If heading out the gulf you have the mouth of the ord(about 30km from ramp) and then the next river is thompsom(55km from ramp) after this is the lyne(75km) and helby(85km), all these rivers are good for a fish all hold barra, fingermark, jew and salmon. But again watch your tides and fuel because it is a long way home and most of the time you will be longer to see another boat.

On the other side of the Gulf is the false mouths but these are hard work if you don't know where you are going. Buy the fish finder book it will show you most of these river's and distances.

Hope this helps

Derby ramp is very good

Sand flies are very bad

Fitz is good or bad depeding on time of year ?

4.6m is rather large tinny to get up into the holes and creeks, but big enough to get failry wide. Have not fished king sound always go past but its very tide dependant as is everything up north!

Plenty fish out of broome if you can get past the sharks ? Thats all ive got !

Up there recently

Wed, 2016-05-04 11:46

I was up in Broome twice at the start of the year and went to Kununurra for Easter, was fortunate enough to stay with locals the whole time and gain a bit of knowledge.

Barramike is right - Wyndham will be hard to fish if you don't know the area, we spent a day up a creek where I landed my big catty and there was not much else other than a couple of big crocs spotted on the banks. The dude I was with has spent his life mapping the area out and knows where the snags and holes are. No phone reception makes you feel pretty isolated there. Pentecost and Ord river apparently hold the best fish.

Did a couple of Fitzroy trips (just fishing from the bank) and didn't land any barra but one time the blokes in the middle of the river landed one, hooked another and also got a decent saw-fish. This was just downstream from where the road crossed over the river (1st crossing). The reality is most creeks will hold fish - it's just a manner of fishing them correctly.

The roads up there are fine but cattle are bloody everywhere at night and they'll still be walking after dawn. If it's very wet they'll come onto the road to dry off too. Most bridges are single lane but everyone is careful enough to slow down before crossing. Otherwise you can cruise at whatever speed you like without much issue.

Wet usually starts in December and runs until March, this year's was shocking and no bait pushed up into the creeks. No bait meant no barra (on a side note - make sure you pack a throw net).

Sandflies are bad - between sunset and sunrise. Long sleeve is the winner for scano.

Kimberley

Fri, 2016-05-06 08:43

I live in Kununurra (KNX)
The East Kimberley is much better than the west. Broome is flat and limited freshwater and the Bluewater is regulated by the wind and limited ramp options outside drowning your car and getting bogged on the beach is a real option.

Fishing here depends on the Wet season. Good Wet then good fishing in the Rivers and out wide in the salt from Wyndham (WYN). Poor Wet then only good out wide. This Wet was hot and very dry so the Ord was crap! Out wide was good once the water temp dropped (see below).

Best time to fish is either the Build-up or after the Wet. There is no Run-off here; that is a Northern Territory phrase. The NT has hugh expansive floodplains which drain after the Wet to form the run-off. The Kimberley doesn't have floodplains. So Sept/Oct and April/May are the best. The build-up is the better to organise/plan for in advance because rain is not a consideration. The weather is warming and this stirs the Barra up as the preferred water Temp is 28-32 degrees. Above or below and the Barra shut down. November = plus 40 degrees and 100% humidity which will be to hot for you. Only real consideration is the wind but see below for traveling etc. Fishing the Wet is difficult to plan for because you never know when it will end. If you plan in advance and it is still raining then you are limited to fishing due to access etc. If you have flexibilty in planning then just keep an eye on the weather then boot it north when it ends. But big Wet = roads closed for a while so fishing the Ord will be limited.

KNX has much better options at your door step.
Lake KNX is right in town and has been stocked with 550,000 Barra. We are catching Barra and fish are approaching the metre length after 3 years in the lake so another year and there will be plenty more. The Ord is right here in town also. There are plenty of options for the Ord but go easy as it is full of hazards and bring spare props etc! The Ord is famous for its big Barra and she holds many.

Anything Kimberley and fishing out of WYN is governed by the weather (WIND) and TIDE. I highlight these because it is imperative you consider and understand these variables. Tide here = 8m plus so that is 1.3m every hour! Add a competing wind and that means rough water!! 8m tide = 15km/hour in speed at the height of the tide so if you are travelling against it will kill the time and fuel....

Barramike is pretty spot on with those distances but they are achievable in the boats you have as long as you study the weather. Winds are generally calm in the early morning so thats when you travel. Camp/fish in a river for the day and then move again next morning unless the winds drop in the aro. Again you need to study the tides and wind as above so travel with the tide and wind. The only limiting factor will be your fuel capacity. There are not many camping options on land out of WYN because of tides and mangroves so as Big John asks you preferrably need to camp on the boat. You probably just read in the papers that a boat capsized in the Lyne River which is all to commom when people camp on the rocks. Buy a Sarca or eqivalent and anchor in mud! We always sleep on the boat.

Live baiting is cheating and no skill and we fish with lures only. An electric motor will add 0's to the fish numbers as spot-lock is God (remember the tide movement). Study the tide times to lock in dates but I can provide further advice on best options etc when you decide what you want to do.

A quick review of the last 6 months was that August - October fished really well out the front. One sessions was 50 Barra from one rock bar. Fishing was dead until late March - April as the water temp was 36 which was too hot during the dry hot Wet. We hit the Berkerley late March for 5 days and killed the pig! Then a heap of Lyne River trips during April with a mate up from Bunbury and he was a Barra virgin. First legal Barra was a 115cm horse followed by his second at 101. Fish mostly at mouth of river on rock bars as water temp still high in River. All the mullet at mouth. Heaps of good Fingermark as well. Ord is crap atm as above due to no rain.

Plenty of options and only a short reply.
Feel free to PM me and I can provide further advice / fishing locations.
If you want check some of my old posts for an overview.
It is worth the trip north.

Shit mate, the Ord sounds

Fri, 2016-05-06 14:19

Shit mate, the Ord sounds crap..... and I'm coming up in 10 days. Will still give the Ord a go, but could you recommend a back up plan if we get nothing after 5 days?
