Koolan Island

Howdy all, if you worked at a place such as Koolan Island or one of those being mined up there, are you allowed to fish there also when not working?

Cheers

Dale

I lived on Koolan Is

for about 12 months around 1988.  In those days you could fish locations around the island.  Some good looking spots would be difficult to get to tho and yes there are crocs about.  Some good fish used to be caught off the wharf.  There were Queensland Grouper the size of VWs that lived under the wharf.  As you can imagine the boating was excellent but the tides play a huge role.  Due to the tidal range you need to fish around the highs and lows.

Whether you are permitted to fish now, I don't know.  I used to fish off the MOF Jetty at the Burrup during construction, try doing that now.

Just had a "welcome booklet"

Tue, 2011-06-14 16:59

Just had a "welcome booklet" sent to me today and there's a few places you can fish and swim, but you cant go alone and you need to sign off on a Recreation and Fishing book. And yes, I've finished up down at Ravensthorpe and looking at a new position up at Koolan.

Cheers

Tue, 2011-06-14 18:32

Hey dale, I worked on koolan about 5 years ago and we had to sign the rec fishing book befor and after going fishing and u couldnt go alone.

These were days before i fished with artificial baits so we had to sweet talk the cook into giving us some of the squid he was cooking up for dinners :)

landed a few blue bone, little gt's etc off the pontoon near the refueling station. didnt really travel anywhere else around the island fishing tho if i had my time again i would have put a lot more effort into it! Theres 2 resident crocs that hang around the pontoon too so try not to fall in if u ever get up there. Good luck its one of the most beautiful places i have ever had the privelage to visit

Howdy Naylor, yeah apparently

Howdy Naylor, yeah apparently the crocs name is Eric, that's in the welcome book as well. I might take some fishing gear with me sometime if I get the job but you cant take much stuff up there as too much weight will be too much for the small planes, so need to wait and see.

G'day Jay, you finished at Rio have you? I might get back to Dampier sometime, there's a few people saying the power station will start up again soon for Horizon. Apparently the govt has spoken again with Rio and and an agreement has been met, but they are arguing over the transmission lines now. So wait and see. I be back there if it goes off.

Cheers

What are the wages like there?

Fri, 2012-09-07 20:06

Do they pay well because it's remote or not so well cos it looks like such an awsome location? Would it be an option to moor a private boat for the 2 weeks on for personal use on the week off? I used to live on the cattle station that backs onto talbot bay and the country up there is magnificent. Getting he opportunity to explore the other side and have a good job would be an awsome prospect.
