Just replied to a post froma lisa hills a true shark hugger over a post where she's petitioning fisheries to ban taking sharks from the water she blocked me pretty quickly when i ssk if she had any proof of among other things sharkfishers using live turkeys as burly ueah live turkey's that juvenile sharks are full of mercury that the vid she's sprucing of a small tiger being cleaned was than left to rot on the beach for 8 days but was still tested for mercury by one of her shark specialist they must be special to check 8 day old shark carcasses for anything in opinion careful people this loopers are gathering a lot of support no matter how ludicrous there ideas are

Seen her on the news the other night
I agree that her and there rest of these anti shark fishing person(s) use anything they can to get support and traction for their agenda.
I saying that there are certain person(s) not doing the right thing when shark fishing, whether to keep or release.
Old fishermen never die they just smell that way.

yeah she's on every page, 6PR
yeah she's on every page, 6PR and anything else she can sell it.
Presuming it gets worse over school holidays but who ever is catching and killing sharks then throwing them back in at the Ammo jetty is not doing anyone any favors.
The other Vid was some bloke with a large tiger down kwinana beach, he's brought it to shore and cut its tail off to let it bleed back in the water...this with kids around middle of the day.
I don't care one bit for sharks, think there numbers have gone through the roof and that the Pro's should be allowed back at them..but these cocks getting filmed doing shit like this is not helping crew that enjoy catch and release.

Shark hugged like that need
Shark hugged like that need to deal with the real world. What happens when no one can go in the water as the shark numbers have totally gone out of control.
I don't agree with the idiots that kill sharks fir the thrill of catch and kill. Catch and eat is another story.
Done my bit over the weekend and took 4 more out of circulation. Lol.

Eating Sharks
I'm keen to hear what advice people such as yourself (given you obviously catch a few) can give us to best target some tasty shark?
That is, what are peoples preferred shark species, sizes, preparation/cleaning, freezing, cooking recommended to have the best chance of a tasty feed of shark?
Backgroud to my question is I believe I have became spoilt over the years eating very selected fish. When I have recently (ie. last 5 years) tried to eat shark, I have struggled to enjoy it.
I have no hesitation in keeping gummy shark (always had a big tick of approval there), but have had poor outcomes with all other species ... most often it ends up in a fish curry where I do my best to hide any unpleasant shark tastes.
And I believe I have tried to follow good preparation by quickly cleaning a caught shark. That is, get rid of fins, gut, head and flushing the backbone with the deck hose ... but still most often manage to get that amonia taste when eating.
I have many questions on this topic ... like have people tried eating any of the abundant green-eye sharks when deep dropping?
Do people keep and eat wobbies (I mostly return them, but have had a 50/50 result with them, some good, some horrible)?
Do the smaller sharks taste better or is it just a case of avoiding the larger ones due to mercury and legal size limit concerns?
That is, any information on the topic of eating sharks would be much appreciated.

You do the right thing as far
You do the right thing as far as cleaning it straight away. Question is do you eat it fresh or after freezing it.
With shark I have found with most species that I have eaten they are better after freezing them . When you thaw them out any impurities will leach out with any other moisture . I have eaten many species over the years metro and up here and I can't say I have had any I wouldn't eat again. Size does matter with sharks, I won't take anything over 5 foot but generally 3 to 4 foot size is fine. As far as wobbys go I don't bother with them as they are a pain to fillet

Sharks
Get rid of the fallacy first, cutting off the fins does not get rid of the ammonia taste, as a former shark fisherman one should know that all it does is remove things you can hold onto.
Clean it as soon as you catch it, while it is still kicking is best, don't leave it till later! You must get rid of the brown strp behind the gizzards asap and flush the canal out down the spine through to where you have cut the tail off. Get it in the slurry as soon as you have cleaned it. Saving your knife edge----- cut from the inside of the skin out, slide your knife in under the skin then upwards so yo only have a small section of the blade cutting at one time. DO NOT wash it in fresh water, if you have made a mess on it then trim it off, do not wash it as this removes a lot of the taste--same goes for all fish.
Best eating shark is one of the protected species and for the smart arses, its not the pointer but grey nurse and tried it well before they became protected and still remember it well
Bronze whaler, whiskery, gummy , small thickskin [sandbar whaler] wobbies and shovelnose---bigger is better so don't bother with any below a metre long as they are not worth the effort filletting them. Small tigers, black tips and makos are edible but not for me I'm afraid, same goes for hammerheads though their are some that swear by them.
Contientious bit here, I freeze all my shark for at least a week before eating. some cannot wait and its on the plate that night
Again, taste is personal, I don't use coatings, breadcrumbs, seasonings, spices etc as I like to saviour the natural taste and not a mouthful of other stuff.

I've had Hammer before John
I've had Hammer before John and quite enjoyed it, was at least 2m.
Tried Tiger not a fan but all the Whalers bloody beautiful. Like you say quick processing is key and have never had ammonia stink from them. It is superb in Thai curry but also dipped in flour, salt pepper , chinese 5 spice and shallow fried.

Filleting
Forgot to add, when filleting you have a beautiful long slab in front of you, with the belly flaps removed, and the temptation is to slice straight along giving you a nice fillet. Wrong, slice down at an angle so that you cut through the fibres and in the process cutting the fibres shorter and making the fillet not stringy and stiff when you go to cook it

How do you flush the canal out down the spine? Remove the head and tail and flush through?

Once you have gutted it and
Once you have gutted it and removed the brown line of shit down the spine I just fill yhe gut cavity with water and let it run out the tail . Holding it up to see where you cut the tail off you can see the water flowing out a small hole. Water under pressure does a better job

my wife actually preferred the whaler to some dhue fillets. i really like the texture of shark, seems a bit firmer.
i never used to keep them, but now i wont hesitate to keep the occasional bronzie.

Great feedback
Thanks to all for those many informative replies.
I think the advice on freezing the fillets for a week (or more) may help me (and prompt cleaning/processing).

For me freezing has worked
For me freezing has worked on shark mackerel too. I prefer it to spaniard after freezing.
