thirsty, have read many
thirsty, have read many reports on owners being dissappointed with their perfomance given they are a v8. search online for reviews, and you will find the answers your looking for. myself, after much research, steered away from them. they look nice, and for the $, not to bad...but i believe there are much more capable 4x4's out there for your $

Father in law
Father in law has an early 2000 model - goes pretty well as a 4x4 but really pricey to service and fix anything. Shocking resale avle too so you shouldn't pay much for a second hand one. Most have a ton of clicks on them.

yes a v8 sounds nice to own
yes a v8 sounds nice to own but do you realy need a v8 in a 4x4, with the new technology these days a smaller motor weather its a 6 or a 3ltr turbo diesel they can perform just as good off road and still cruise comfortably on the open road speeds, my navara will cruise on 120 easily and still get verry good fuel consumption and is good off road as well

land rover
the v8 is a bit thirsty if worked hard and some had issues with liners slipping.
i have the diesel which is great, plenty of grunt, will go anywhere and cheap to run.
parts arent too bad as long as you steer clear of dealers.
take a look at www.aulro.com forum to get all the info you need.
resale value is pretty bad buy if your buying used theres some real bargains out there
cheers

A guy i knew at tafe was a land rover nut and drove a 98 v8.I said to him that he was crazy as from what i had been told landrover were unreliable and repairs exspensive,He said you must get one with full service history and in top shelf condition and repairs are cheap if you know where to look.As for 4wd stock vs stock a disco will go more place than a patrol or landcruiser. As for power i went for a drive with him and while no sports car had enough poke for a 4wd.I Think he was getting around about 18L/100km on vapour injection gas

Avoid like the Plague
The Dog and Lemon Guide rates the 1989-2004 Disco as a brilliant offroad vehicle meaning it spends most of its time off the road being fixed. Their rating for reliability "Appalling" & overall rating "Avoid Like the Plague. http://dogandlemon.com/

Oil leaks galore
Had a Disco for three years leaked oil all over the place mainly transfer box Landrover could not get to the bottom of it...
Most expensive vehicle to run that I have ever had - had a merc for awhile and that was cheaper to run.... If you need the 4X4 go Nissan or Toyota
Currently have a patrol and thats great
