laptop plugin gps

Hi All
Has anybody had any experience with the gps units you can plug into a laptop via a usb. I'm thinking of getting one to use with a chart navigation system on a laptop with a 14" screen. The old eye sight isn't as good as it used to be and the large screen hopefully will cure the problems I have trying to see a small 7" screen. If anyone can relate their experience's with this type of gps any info would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

a couple of weeks ago due to a new gps head unit being intalled. was the size of a ten cent piece and was receving data as accurately as the previous reciever. id think a solid state hard drive for your laptop would be recomended.

Just get a USB GPS receiver

Just get a USB GPS receiver then download a program like Aussie Explorer. We use it for work. Can set waypoints and stuff on it and it runs through a google map like system. Cheap and effective.

that is the setup I'm hoping to use very glad to read your post I think that for the price this the way to go to get good maps at a size that's easy on the eye. Do you find memory map easy to use? also did you transfer any old position from a memory card onto the computer and memory map I'ld like to hear how you did it .
thanks again to all who have helped with info

separate monitor

Mon, 2013-06-24 20:31

Hey guys

I havent been keeping up with GPS stuff recently, but, I recall several years ago you could get a hand held GPS unit and plug it into a large VGA monitor. Is this sort of this still available.

Just thinking when I get my next boat, rather than having a dedicated GPS unit, possibly having a larger monitor which is controlled by a remote unit. Am I barking up the wrong tree?

Cheers

Brad

you can download the mapping software free but you will have to buy the disc to get the charts

or it will work with  certain types of chart....look it up on the memory map web site
