Lateral thinkers, need your help.

I need to come up with a way to transport 2 90cm helium balloons from spot to spot up at Quobba. Last trip we wasted to many, and I'm not keen on putting the balloon in between me and the passenger again.  I was thinking cargo netting from my tool box to my tray sides, but I wasn't quite sure how to fix it down without drilling any holes(which I don't want to do).

It needs to be a secure but removable way to transport the balloons without them popping and wasting valuable gas. Cheers

Yeah I did see them at Bunnings, but there wasn't anything to attach the hooks to on the toolbox side of my tray. I guess I could buy a big cargo net, but I wanted to be able to access my toolbox easily. Can't really think of any other options

Not sure when you are leaving, but have you considered buying a portable helium gas bottle and filling balloons when you get there.

Just did a Google search and appears you can get them on eBay.

Not sure if cost effective.

We'll be taking helium in a D or E sized bottle. It's more so the carting of the balloons from spot to spot or back to camp that I'm worried about.

Clamps

Sat, 2016-06-11 17:08

Only alternative I can think of atm is perhaps using the really strong clamps. If you're not going to be driving fast I think they'll hold for slow-med speed track driving, tie them to the head board and clamp the balloon at the knot?

Sat, 2016-06-11 17:08

We have tried clamps and failed. Because of the large surface area of the balloon, even at low speeds they tent to shake violently. Plus when you know the fish are on the bite it's very hard to drive slowly haha

 Maybe wrap the balloons

Sat, 2016-06-11 17:13

Maybe wrap the balloons individualy with bubble plastic and then wrap them in the cheap fruit tree netting from bunnings.

Strategically placed black(and do not use the white ones as they are not UV resistant) cable ties as anchor points around each balloon

netting with some kind of quick release clips  (like dog leash clips) on rope to the side tiedown bars under the ute tray.

Either that or use a cheap tarp across the ute back.

Maybe palce them on a piece of foam that will go from the tool box across the ute bed and over the edge of the tray

Hope this helps.

Yeah thanks, the tarp would probably be the best option, just wrap the balloons up an tie them down. Simple and cost effective, might go with that

Safety with helium and transporting it

Sat, 2016-06-11 17:21

Helium is an inert gas right, Hmmm take a look at this and think carefully how you are going to transport it.

This clip certainly surprised me.

That is Hydrogen

Mon, 2016-06-13 08:04

Helium will never explode. Hydrogen certainly will, hence why some people (rocket scientist) are playing with Hydrogen fuelled rockets.
Straight from Web: "Helium is a special gas called a Noble Gas, which means it doesn't burn. When a match is held near a helium-filled balloon, the balloon pops. That's it. But when a match is held near a hydrogen-filled balloon: BOOM! a real explosion."

I reckon you would be able to hook that cargo net around the lugs the   drop sides attach to....  And maybe a couple big garbage or something similar  bags over the balloons would help

Card board box

Sat, 2016-06-11 18:03

grab a couple of large packing boxes

collapse them when not in use

you could push and mould the balloon into a box when transporting

surely you can tie a box off against your crash board

Might sound like a stupid idea but honestly a bean bag without the beans might be the way to go. It has a zipper and you could easily attach it anywhere on the Ute, clamp etc.

Run a rope

Sat, 2016-06-11 21:50

From the protective frame at the back of your cab over the tailgate, behind the toolbox,  and tie tight. Use this as one side attachment for the cargo net, the other side goes to the tie rails on the other side of the ute. You can keep your ballooons under it and still have access to the toolbox.

Easy

Sun, 2016-06-12 09:19

Frankly I am suprised no one has suggested the obvious.

Get at a few more (lots) and just tie them with string all over the car and navigate the whole lot to where you are going at approx 100 ft off the ground.

Added  benefit of being able to scout the fishing ground as well. LOL

I am going to quobba in

Wed, 2016-06-15 09:44

I am going to quobba in August and will be facing the same dilemma in my ute. The answer that I have come up with is a wool pack. They are 1200x1200x1500 approx, tough as nails yet smooth and soft. One wool pack will easily hold 2 balloons, lies flat when not in use or folds up to the size of a picnic blanket and is only $15!! I used to be a sheep farmer so I've handled a few in my time and I can guarantee they will be perfect for what you need!!

Found something that will work

Sat, 2016-06-18 17:21

Thanks for all the ideas. I found a large bean bag case, it will fit the balloon in perfect and I'll weigh it down with ziplock bags filled with sand. It was suprisingly hat to find a big enough cardboard box but this way I won't have to worry about getting anything wet.
