L'CRUISER TDV8 vs RANGE ROVER SPORT TDV8 - FUEL CONSUMPTION
Submitted by Septimus on Fri, 2011-11-11 21:21
Hello All,
Not sure where to post this on the website, but, can owners of either of the above vehicles help me out with respective (real life vs bullshit from the dealers) fuel consumption figures?
I'm currently using an F250 to tow a boat weighing just under 3.5t and getting a bit tired of driving the F250 around the City - absolutely awesome vehicle BUT just too big for a regular 'car' around town (IMO).
So looking for another option that might be easier to use as an everyday drive AND tow the boat on trips out of town - narrowed it down to the above two vehicles.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Punch fuel consumption of
Punch fuel consumption of those two vehicles in google and there should be a few forums about with threads containing real life figures to help you out. Sounds like fuel consumption isnt much of a concern though with such a big car and boat!!!

I am not surprised you have not had a reply yet Septimus
The guys with the 200s either got a good one or are at the nearest repco buying bulk oil and fuses just incase the seatbelt warning light fuse blows and you cant move your car.Meanwhile the Rangie owners have not been able to put enough fuel through to get a good measure of consumption before the car went back to the mechanic.
On a serious note was speaking to a guy the other day and he said his 200 series is returning about 11.5 to 12 litres per 100 (not towing) I am holding fire on getting a car until they release the 200 series standard which should come out in manual and maybe the single turbo diesel.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

on a different note it may
on a different note it may pay to check the the dept of transport regarding towing ratios ie; the towed vehicle cant be more than one and a half times the weight of the towing vehicle........pretty sure that still applies?

I think the 1 1/2 times rule
I think the 1 1/2 times rule only applies where the manufacturer hasnt specified a maximum tow rating doesnt it?
Besides though, both of those vehicles would be 2.5 tonne plus Id guess so wouldnt concern a 3.5 tonne tow.
Fuel consumption-while the specified "government tests" have little relationship to every day driving, at least they are a standard test that can be used to compare.
If nothing else maybe a bit more consistent than Joe Bloggs "mine only uses half a tank to drive to Sydney and my mates 200 uses 3/4"!
what a dilemma-which toy to buy......

Ignore tony
Allrounder merely has Landcruiser jealousy syndrome because he cannot get over the thought of selling his beloved 100 series with its massively powerful and reliable diesel engine because he does not want to scratch a new cruiser if he buys one, hence his Standard wish list.
Mate I have the 200 and at 30,000km has not used enough oil that I have even noticed, tows beautifully and in reality if you can afford one you can afford to put fuel in it. If you were not towing a lot of KM I would seriously look at a petrol one as I think the extra 10K for a diesel is a root and the petrol engine is a nice one.
Fuel usage is about 12-13 per 100 average around town, 10-11 on the highway not towing, and I get about 20-21 towing a 3.2tonne glass boat in the diesel. Mate has the petrol and is about 15-16 around town, 12-13 on the highway and towing my old boat was about the 22-24 so for all practical purposes not a great deal of difference and you could make it up with how heavy your right boot is.
As for the range rover, looks better, not sure how good parts availability is around the norwest is though.

I looked into all of this
I looked into all of this doing quite a bit of research included the V6 twin turbo disco too. I was leaning towards the TDV8 200 series. I have ended up going for the TDV6 Jeep Grand Cherokee. At $55k RRP on the road (1/2 price of 200 series) 3.5T towing capacity 177Kw & 550Nm is not far behind the diesel & is infront of the Petrol 200 series in torque. Their quoted combined fuel consumption is 8.3L/100km. Goes better/harder than my petrol V6 Prado did. I haven't got any towing figures yet but driving it like a sports car (run in how I use it) averaged 9.7L/100km for the 1st 1000km. The standard fitment of the Base Laredo is pretty much equivalent to a VX Prado or GXL 200 series

If you can afford either of those cars, the cost of running it shouldn't be an issue

COLORADO
Thanks for the opinions and info fellas.
I've discovered that the Holden Colorado Turbo Diesel crew cab is apparently rated at 3.5t braked towing capacity - how 'realistic' an option do you blokes think the Colorado would be?
Also, are there any other crew cab utes that might do the job?

Colorado is only Rated to 3 tonne mate, I just traded mine 2 weeks ago. It pulled my 3 tonne boat no drama's up to Thev & back, Albany a few times. Averaged 17L/100k towing & 10L/100k around town.

3.0 t towing capacity not 3.5 I have one and that's straight off the holden site.
My boat will be getting up over 2.5 tonne boat and trailer so I wouldnt reccomend for a 3.5 tonne load

i tow 2.5 to 3 ton boat to
i tow 2.5 to 3 ton boat to exmouth , sharkbay every year in a 200 series and would average 23lt per 100km, but am heavy with the right foot and my car has alot of extras.
great towing car and very smooth to drive.
if you log onto LCOOL (LANDCRUSIER OWNERS ON LINE) there is pages of peoples fuel consumtion. some quoting 17lt per 100km towing 3ton vans etc.
every car is diffrent , driving styles ,all the extras etc ,roof racks , bigger tyers, suspension lift, chips , exuasts all play part in the end figures.
cheers lee

Crusier
I tow a 3.5 tonne cat. As mentioned fuel consumption is VERY dependant on the right foot. I actually get better returns towing the 3.5 tonne cat than I did towing the 2.5 tonne haines as I was less heavy with my foot.
But it was still up at 21-24 liters per hundred kilometres. I still make the Exmouth run only stopping at Gero and Canarvon for fuel unless there is a 30 knot head wind
Thats a lot more than i thought it would be.
But it dosent struggle and is a pleasure to drive. Overtake if you need to and cruise up hills.
One thing with the cruiser thou is that the rear end suspension is too soft. I fitted airbags to both the 100 series and 200 series to level it up when the boat is on. Definately needs them.
Twin turbo..V8 diesel..Ohh what a feeling!!

Yep am running a Jeep
Yep am running a Jeep Commander myself, Twin turbo 3ltr diesel.
Fuel usage around town is 11 ltr per 100kms.
Towing between 20-23 ltrs per 100kms (towing almosat 3.5t)
I was going through the same exercise a couple years ago, and ended up going with the Jeep.
just dhu it

rangie
they had an article in the saturdays papaer a while back on the new rangie T /D and from memory the new motor has around 1000 NM and around 220 kw of power which in my book is great for towing , even the new 200 TD can be chipped and better exhaust will be around the same power ratings , i would agree with the other guys comments that if you go the L cruiser you need to upgrade the suspension to improve the ride and load capabilitys,
