Leader Tying

Ive been tying 30lb sunline FC to 20lb braid mainline with a variety of small profile knots to see which was the best.. double uni, slim beauty, mid/midnight knot. All seem to allow the line to pass through the guides pretty well.

However I've got a problem that the FC leader has really strong loops (twist) when it comes off the spook from the shop. When tie it on to the mainline and run it through the guides there are still loops, the loops travel through the guides when I cast, and it means the knot does not pass through the guides cleanly. It so bad that the line is passing well outside the guides as the loops go through, the knot hits the guides and slows down, and the line behind the knot gets tangled as there is a speed difference.

Does anyone else have this problem with the leader material being in tight loops and causing the knot to hit the guides? I've thought of stretching it out by hand (or in the water if the lure weight is heavy enough), but I was wondering if there was another way to get around this problem?

I think he is talking about the loops in the leader causing the slowdown rather than the knot. I see that a bit on one of my reels.

I haven't bothered learning how to tie the bimni, I just use a plaited double and all my plaitted doubles lasted my exmouth trip which is a good test.

Biminis are pretty easy

Biminis are pretty easy jamie, just form a loop, twist perhaps 60 times, then put the loop on something and move your finger up and it self coils around. Then hitch each leg, then a triple mainline hitch. Worth learning (at least for braid).

Stretching the line might help. Make sure you do it with a fair amount of force, not just a gentle tug.

Havent had that problem when using FC. How heavy lures are you using? The lure weight, when dangling should keep the line strait. Otherwise, perhaps you are releasing the line a little early? Running a shorter leader of a rodlength will mean that there are no wraps on the line to tangle. How long is the leader at the moment?

Lures up to 25gr. The knot

Lures up to 25gr. The knot profile is not the issue Im pretty sure. Especially when using a knot with both tag ends facing backwards.

I like to run longer leaders so yeah the leader was all the way onto the spool, and therefore leader material was coming off the spool on the cast. Potentially going to a shorter leader may stop the leader re-twisting when it gets back on the spool before each cast. Not had this problem before with lighter breaking strains though..!
