Leg gear oil change

I've been mucking around trying to make a small oil pump work when changing my leg oil because I didn't have the correct fitting to screw into the drain plug which is 3/8".
I didn't realise that Mercury make a pump kit that screws directly onto the mercury SAE90 32oz bottle and it has the 3/8" fitting and a metric 8mm x 1.25 threaded adapter all include which will fit any outboard.
I bought it at aquasports marine at full retail for $20.... Bargain
If you want one the Mercury Part number is: 91-8M0072135

Yes I had one of the similar ones posted above but the merc one has the fitting which enables you to pump from the bottom upwards so there are no airlocks and when you have flow out of the breather you are guarranteed correct oil level. the 3/8" fitting is what I really wanted... and for $20 for the whole pump I could be bothered making one...

It really doesn't matter
It really doesn't matter whether you pump the oil in from the bottom or the top as long as air can escape from the top plug hole while it is being filled there will be no difference.
I actually prefer filling from the top because once it's full and the oil is flowing out of the top hole you just remove the filling tube and put the plug in without loosing any oil.
Filling from the bottom plug hole you have to unscrew the fill fitting and quickly screw in the plug before any of the oil drains out.

Yes I see your point &
Yes I see your point & that's how I was doing it but found the breather hole in the top is small and causes air locks which causes the oil to spill out prematurely. Now that I have used the bottom fill method I'm converted. As long as you putt the breather cap in before disconnecting the pump the thick oil virtually doesn't run out the drain hole at all, you don't even have to rush. Each to there own, I just thought I'd share. The Mercury procedure is to fill from the bottom so they must also have their reasons.

I just use the nozzle off a silicone tube and jam it in, fill with a 2 litre pump pressure sprayer bottle from bunnings. (From the bottom) The hose is just pressure fitted into the back end of the silicone nozzle. Doesn't leak and has never popped out while filling.
