Ocean whaler owners
hi guys
have had this feeling for a while that there may have been water in the bottom of my hull, as they are supposedly a sealed hull this shouldn't be the case.
Bit the bullet yesterday after a trip out and Went and bought a bung to install in the transom.
I drilled a pilot hole through the bottom of the transom and sure enough water started coming out, and it came and it came and it came.
I stuck a bucket under it to gauge the amount of water that was in there and to my horror about 100L was in there.
im guessing the leak is through where the scuppers are installed and it may be a really slow leak that has just accumulated over the 3 years I have had the boat.
Anyway to all other ocean whaler owners it may worth installing a bung just to be sure.

100 kg of dead weight that's a worry alright
To be carrying all that extra weight as well as the fact that you have a water ingress problem as well sure is cause for concern.

Timber
there is definitely timber in the transom, would hope it's marine ply.
Need to monitor it now over the next few outings to see how bad the leak is and work through sealing all the possible entry points but I think it's the scuppers that's the problem.

Shouldn't be too hard to
Shouldn't be too hard to sort
Transom "should" be reasonably well sealed on the inside as well (lots of boats would have major rot problems if not). Want to make sure you seal the hole you put in for the bung well too - I'd brush some resin through the hole (to seal both the wood and any glass fibre ends you've exposed when drilling) and once this is dried then seal the bung fitting in with lots of marine sikaflex.
You may be right re scuppers but are there any other through hull fittings (livewell, kill tanks etc) that maybe have a cracked drain hose or hull fitting/outlet under the deck - sometimes the hose cracks or the fitting itself becomes brittle/cracks and allows water ingress.
Always queried any boat with a sealed hull - first thing I'd do is install bung/s and put a sealed inspection port (and a decent bilge) in, a bit of air flow when storing is always good and a bilge can be a lifesaver in an emergency (even in foam filled hulls).
Cheers
Good luck in sorting it

Thanks
thanks paul
have looked all over the boat and the scuppers are the only thing that I reakon would leak.
I don't think the water is gushing in I think this is s build up over the past 3 years but now I have put the bung in I can monitor that and hopefully find the source.

I believe it would be the scuppers
I had problems with mine when I had my Ocean Whaler and took it back to Nigel for repairing. That fixed it but I still wasn't happy and was going to change from an open scupper to ones with the flat hose like they have on some of the rubber duckies, that way no water can come in other than over the gunnels. But then sold it prior to doing the work.

Boat leaking,Poor service
It takes a long time to get a good brand name, and a very short time to get a bad one,I've had some of the same issues.

Not into sealed hulls either. A big bung and a couple of inspection hatches at the back if you can
That way in winter you can dry the inside hull out by opening the lids and u can have a looksy from time to
Time with respect to mould , precursor to rot from the inside out

Mould should not be taken as
Mould should not be taken as an indicator for rot as such, it can be taken as meaning damp conditions exist.
Rot should not occur if the wood is properly sealed (and if it is marine ply or other rot resistant material all the better) but mould can still grow on the surface.
allowing the hull to air certainly helps with both but once the woods wet, rot is really only a matter of time as the fibreglass will trap the moisture in the wood and it will not dry out.
As an aside I have seen a few foam fill hulls where due to the flex in the hull the foam breaks away from the hull, the continual rubbing then wears the foam down. Recently saw a hull compartment around 1 metre square (that was previously foam filled) with the ball of foam now reduced to half a basket ball size ball left rolling around in the bottom of the compartment.

Damp in hull
an upside to all of this if there is one is that the water that I drained out had no bad odour to so am hoping all is good inside. Also hoping that any timber inside the hull is coated in fibreglass.

bar anything unusual or
bar anything unusual (such as modifications not done properly) or faults you will find any stringers etc. should be well sealed, sounds like the water was reasonably fresh which should suggest the problem was reasonably recent (you'd be surprised how much water can get in quickly through even a small hole)

Not sure aboit internally...
But my scuppers just keep letting water in at the back.
Not a self draining but more like a self filling deck.
Took it to Nigel who said scuppers just needed adjusting but no improvement.
Has anyone else had any luck changing style of scuppers? Seems like a design flaw to me where they are positioned.
Im prob gunna just get some big ass plugs and plug them up. Pull them out only if i need to like when washing the boat.
Sick of wet feet.

Mate my haines cc was a bit
Mate my haines cc was a bit like that i redesigned them using 90 mm stormwater connections. For the bung i found some 90mm foam circles drilled a hole through them to run some cord attached to a plastic stopper so it wouldnt pull through and tied the cord off above the scupper hole . Simple cheap and works.
