Legal dimensions for trailer and boat in WA question

Hi,

Does anyone know 100% what the legal MAXIMUM towing length of a boat trailer is on WA roads?

AND what is the legal MAXIMUM towing length of a boat in WA?

Does the size of the vehicle towing the trailer and boat come into the equation?

Also is the max weight dependent on the vehicle towing it or is there also a max legal towable weight when it comes to a boat and trailer?

Cheers

Too many questions mate.

1) The max tow length is 11m IIRC.

2) See above.

3) Yes

4) Yes and yes, there is an ultimate weight for trailers, and an ultimate weight for vehicles, you can tow only the lower as per ratings.

Hi Till

I'm presuming IIRC means "if I remember correctly"?

So I can tow a boat that is 11m?

Here come more questions...

... is that 11m for the boat only or for the boat and trailer and vehicle towing it combined?

I only ask lots of questions cause the shite documentation the government provides has lots of clauses.

See pages 33 onwards http://www.slp.wa.gov.au/pco/prod/FileStore.nsf/Documents/MRDocument:23719P/$FILE/RoadTrfcVhleStandRu2002-01-b0-01.pdf?OpenElement

At the end fo the day Fury Boats sells a 28' boat which is supposedly trailerable, but saying that, what is 28', is that the boat without bracket, or is that LOA including bracket, or is that the boat, bracket and motors combined?

Cheers

If you read all the clauses,

If you read all the clauses, you can find out the answers to your questions.

When dealing with main roads, you can assume that when they refer to trailerable lengths, they refer to the load on the trailer plus the trailer together.

They don't have anything to do with boats or their lengths.

The reg (VicRoads) I was reading the other day was actually 12.2m for the trailer max length, which of course couldn't be loaded illegally (refer to overhangs). I think the 11m length was from an earlier ADR.

You can tow just about

You can tow just about anything. 28 fury? Yeah.

Off the top of my head I believe you can go up to 3.5 wide without an escort but all other overwidth restrictions in place.

Your trailer obviously has to be up to the job, as does the capacity on the tow vehicle. You may also need a heavy vehicle licence depending on your tow vehicle and overall weight.

One other thing to keep in mind is by the time you put all this on the trailer its going to be high. Over 4.3 you need a permit. Over 4.5 it really starts getting interesting.

Next year I will be towing around a new rig a bit. 9.3m plus the trailer. 3.4 wide and 6t so it can be done.

This boat is trailerable, you might have seen it before in Kane's post about winning a fishing trip in Karratha, not sure if being a fifth wheeler helps on the legality side of things.

Yes, the ball load on

Yes, the ball load on something like that would be crazy and that shifts it between the tow vehicle's axles instead.

I'm sure

2.5m wide is the maximum legal width before permits come into play and then I believe when you reach 3.1m thens that's when towing all hrs finish and other permits/restrictions apply.

3.5m wide when things start getting sticky, flashing lights, escorts and daylight towing restrictions apply. I also believe that you cannot just willy nilly park anywhere as overlength applys as well.

I have a mate that found all this too hard so now he parks the boat at a mates place near the ramp, oh and he has a TRUCK to tow the boat.

Ironically these restrictions are MUCH stiffer for commercial operators as well they have to be surveyed every "2" yrs.

I would be checking the braking system continually.

not quite correct on the

not quite correct on the hours

up til recently there was no overwidth towing outside of daylight, now its over 2.7M

In the metro area its no freeways, not within 30km (I think) of CBD during rush hours plus a few others.
