Lesson Learnt the hard way
Submitted by AaronC on Wed, 2013-10-16 10:48
After talking with my mate a few weeks ago about the close calls i have had with bearings and hubs, i told him to get straight onto fixing his trailer up so he wont get caught out one day.
Well Sunday afternoon at 5pm on his way back from Mandurah on the freeway ..... BANG. Tyre and rims gone and this was the final result.
After 4 hours stuck on the side of the road and $600 tow from Thomas road exit to Madeley NOR. I Think he has learnt his lesson.
Funny when its not you!!!!!!

same thing happened to me a few weeks back. Luckily it was only a ten minute walk to super cheap. Got new lugs for 28 bucks, hammered the old ones out new ones in and away went. 30 bucks and 40 mins later was back on the road. Very lucky. You're mate isn't alone, I learnt the hard way also. Just gotta learn from it.

That's what happens with poor trailer maintenance. You are lucky no one was hurt.

Ubolts
yeah I am always checking mine, new tyres coming up in the next couple of weeks.
Judging by the rust on the U bolts it looks like the whole thing needs some lanox/inox

Hate to say but it appears
Hate to say but it appears to be something missed by even the most basic look.
easiest inspection procedure is grab top of rim and shake.
Or like the truckies a hammer and hit each tyre and hear if one is going down, loose studs/bearings etc
Hard to see exactly whats happened here but i see one severely flogged stud and the rest snapped off?

Same happened
Heading back from our annual Hamelin trip this year had a bit of a noise followed immediately by a wheel overtake the car on the Perth Bunbury highway.
All 5 studs sheared in almost identical fashion and not a pretty site broken on the side of the road.
Fortunately only 1/2 hr out of Mandurah so quick inspection of damage and a run in to the local auto store followed by some handy roadside maintenance had us on our way again.
Bearings had been cleaned / inspected and regreased prior to the trip and appeared in good condition, The sudden shearing of the studs however most surprising, Only thing I could think of was over tension previously when a rattle gun was used ?
Next time at the cost of some new hubs might just replace them anyway or at least press out and replace the studs.

Been there done this
And had a service 2 weeks prior. Driving between Karratha and Exxy just before Xmas. bang tyre goes, studs x 2 sheared off, others bent. Lucky lucky had a spare complete set in the boat. The tyre rim was ratshit but the spare saved the day.
It wasnt fun in 44deg heat next to melting asphalt. In this case PPPPPP didnt work. (Prior Preperation Prevents Piss Poor Performance).
I am still none the wiser at the cause but as mentioned hot as hell.
