Life Threatening Prawn thingy???

hey all,

just have a family bet of $10

parent thinks that a river prawn has some sort of vein, bone, artery, gland that is life threatening or can make you really sick and that is why there is a special way of cleaning them?

is this True or False?

ahahahhahahah

Cheers

Vein

Tue, 2010-09-21 21:20

The vein he's talking about is its shit chute that runs from its innards in its head down its back [in its flesh] to its bum. It is usually full of crap and should be removed before eating though I've never heard of anyone dying from eating it.

I don't think filter feeders concentrate toxins in their intestine, that would have like 1 day's food only. They concentrate toxins in their flesh, or liver in some cases.

most people do peel them and scrape out the poop shoot, but it is getting more popular to eat the whole prawn - head, shell, legs and all. can be a bit crunchy and copping a spike in your gum between your teeth is not fun.

you probably consume more toxins when walking around the streets of Perth then you would consume eating prawns over your whole lifetime.

Not so sure about eating the 'chit chute'. I remember my old man ending up in hospital with a strain of Hepatitus that was put down to just that.

Ive always cleaned them properly since then.

Have been catching and consuming prawns from the swan for over 20 years and very rarely clean the chute out.  With the big leader prawns the chute does come out when you peel them right which is good as they have a bigger chute.

Woo hoo, $10 richer you are...you can get a few more squid jigs now!

Cheers Pete

Load of shite

Wed, 2010-09-22 08:57

It is all a matter of taste. You can de-vein (de-poop shoot) them if you want to, or just eat it. There would never be enough crap in there to do any harm to anyone. If people get food poisoning from seafood it is usually the processing that causes it, and not the seafood itself.

I am with Dicey. Raw prawn with Soy and Wasabi are to die for. So delicate a texture it is unbelievable. Same for raw squid and scallops.

I am also into eating the whole prawn Japanese style. Cook the crap out of the head until it is as crispy as and its like a beautiful prawn cracker.

Dale there is nothing raw in seafood I wouldnt try

Thu, 2010-09-23 07:48

Perhaps not Fugoe. Tried raw crab claw but it was a bit hard to get out of the shell and sort of a bit slimmy. But so is oysters.

Its all good but obviously I only do this with something I caught as fresh as. Yum, Yum.

Wed, 2010-09-22 15:12

sorry to say but some people do have alergies to shellfish, some of it are things like iodine in them as well, yes it does help to remove the veins but if the prawn is frozen whole it goes right through. It doesnt matter if it a river prawn or not.
