Line on my reel

Hello follow fishers

i have a question about what line i should put on my penn 950 spinfisher

At the moment i have only 20lb mono line and do want to upgrade the line

So i was thinking of 401b mono or maybe 50lb or 301b

also i have never had braid on one of my reels so if thebraid id a better chose please tell me what to do.

Cheers FISH-ON

line on your reel.

Yea as Mjohns said, Braid is the way to go, 50lb is on most of mine and handles everything. It does cost a little more and it does pay to make sure your rod is suitable to run braid too (it can stuff up your eyes) but definately beats the "DOH" when you lose that fish...

LB or Boat

Sun, 2013-09-15 13:18

Hey FISH-ON,

Are you primarily LB or on the boat? Looking at your profile looks like you are doing a lot of land based fishing - my personal opinion is that you need to choose the type and rating of line to suit the style of fishing and what you are targeting. Braid has many benefits, especially a quality braid - but it does take some getting used to. I'm probably one of the few that has actually gone back to mono as my primary on my surf rod. I use 30lb mono and have no problems landing fish up to around 20kg off the beach - including sharks - without wire.

40lb mono will have way too

Sun, 2013-09-15 17:01

40lb mono will have way too much strech for bottom bashing in any real depth.

I use the FG knot for braid to leader.

Braid

If you are also on the boat, braid is probably the better option. You can get high quality mono lines that have very little stretch....but they can be unforgiving. If I were you, I'd probably go for a high quality braid 40lb-50lb - as others have stated. If you are fishing LB around reef or rocks, it's wise to put a long wind on leader on - as this holds up better to abrasion, particularly when under duress during a fight!

If you Google 'braid breaking strength' or 'braid break tests' it will give you an idea of what you should be going for in terms of brand. Often the cheaper braids in particular will state a breaking strain of 40lb - when in reality it is closer to 30lb.

One common reason for dropped fish when switching to braid is also your knots. Make sure you are putting in a couple of extra twists/turns and the knot is nice and secure as they slip much more easily. I still use the uni knot for most applications - it holds, you get close to breaking strength and it is quick and easy to tie. That said, there are better knots out there.

As for leader knots - there are heaps to choose from. Again, you can google breaking strains to see which knots hold up best when joining braid to mono/flouro.

It's a bit of a trade off....too light on the line and you can drop the dream fish...too heavy and you might put the fish off. I would suggest 50lb is a great place to start, and if it is not working you can always drop the B/S in the future.

Cheers

Buschy
