list of do's and don'ts... please add your wisdom
Submitted by straith on Wed, 2014-06-04 19:31
Hi all,
Probably already been done but was thinking it would be good to have at least one must do or don't from each of us.
Landbased and boat.
I'll get the ball rolling;:
#1 - Never leave home without the SKIPPER putting in all bungs!
(I stipulate it must be the skippers job to avoid major marital, family or friend rifts when you launch and skipper starts screaming at nominated deckie... ive been on both ends:-)
Who's next......????

Prepare
Might be a no-brainer but prep the boat in the designated area, not down on the ramp blocking the way. Seen a few people get a bit unhappy at people doing this.

Seems ridiculous but I've heard of vandals pulling peoples trailer hitch pin out at the boat ramp...always check it and double check your trailer connections everytime you return to your car to tow. Takes 15 seconds.

Yip
Not only that bloody vandals cut the spectre winch rope, and partially unsrewed the shakle when we were parked for a beer after fishing at Hampton harbour yacht club dampier.
Boat ended up on the road. - search "somebody loose a boat" http://fishwrecked.com/forum/someone-lose-boat
Caught and was underage little turds.
Minimal damage luckily, some I could fix. Insurance paid me cash to get it fixed, so did what I could, and since the gearbox was destroyed on the 2S Johno, upgraded to an ETEC for just a little extra.
NOW. #1 - Check Bungs
#2 - Check winch rope/chain, shakle and turn buckle (which I added after) before leaving anywhere.

Contingency Plan
Best way to cover yourself in any situation is to have a contingency plan to any possible danger or emergency.
For example if you have a capsized boat a set of Goggles easily accessible to retrieve other items might be handy.
Also good maintenence and risk assessment always the best prevention to any problem.

Halfway through a day where
Halfway through a day where we weren't catching any fish I discovered a mate had a banana in his lunchbox. Just about threw him overboard (told him either its him or the banana so over went the banana). We caught a few fish once it was out of sight (but the damage was done).
I now constantly call him "Banana Boy" and he is yet to be allowed back on the boat (mainly through lack of opportunity).
He cheekily rocked up one new years eve with a banana hanging around his neck....

Spare anchors with chain and ropes. Drill a screw into the
shackle on the chain that holds the boat onto the trailer then you dont have to go looking for a pair of pliers when it gets seized as your trying to launch. I dont have a dual battery system so I always take one of those jump starter battery packs with me you can also charge a mobile phone off them from the USB or cigarrete lighter socket and run a bilge pump if need to. The work light on them is handy for night fishing. Its been used a couple of times by other guys at the ramp when their batteries are flat as well - very handy and cheap to buy.

Totally agree
And have tested this "banana theory" because I am a true sceptic about these sort off things.
Have been fishing off Dampier with or without banana's, even introduced a random element when the deckie wouldnt inform me if a banana was onboard until after a trip. Thus I didnt know.
Logged it all.
Surprise surprise. No difference in catch rates.
Know the K+ theory. Mixed banana's in burley for herring etc and they bite like mad. Caught a couple on a piece of banana which surprised me no end. When not using banana in the mix they still bite and so far I havent noticed a plus or minus, but it certainly doesnt hinder the bite.
So if you like banana's come out on my boat, anytime.

Be prepared- get all your gear in the boat, ropes attached, rods in, bait defrosting, bimni up, safety chain done finger tight etc. Do it away from the ramp so people who are already ready can slip in and out without any dramas. Also know what you have to do to get the boat in the water efficiently. That includes knowing how to REVERSE A TRAILER!! That reminds me off a classic
Had a double story beach shack in Avalon, Mandurah. As students went for a 'pissy" weekend.
Mate got a little under the weather. Thunder and lightning and a hell off a storm outside.
Still decided to piss from the balcony rather than loo.
You guesed it, straight into the wind, and with the howling wind not only did it come back, it came back and up and smacked him in the face. That set off a reaction and caused him with a gobfull of piss and a bellyful of other piss to spew, you guesed it again, smack into the wind and blew back all over him.
Crawled back in all covered in piss and spew. I dont think all off us have ever laughed that much.
He never did it again, and nor have I. to that "dont"!

Make sure whoever is holding
Make sure whoever is holding the boat on the jetty while you get the car and trailer knows to move the boat along the jetty whenever the next boat is out of the way.
This is especially important in Coral Bay where it takes a long time to get the car.It is usually the skipper who gets the car and often whoever is holding the just does not realise that they are holding people up so make sure you explain it to them.
