live bait tanks

I am thinking about a live bait tank...  will be home made.  Thinking some form of barrell, bigger than a 10 litre bucket, secured onto the transom flat and plumbed into the deckwash, or with its own pump, so the overflow goes straight out over the back of the boat...  thoughts?  Where would I find a suitable barrell?  What have others improvised with?

Did you see mine on the back

Wed, 2013-12-04 21:37

Did you see mine on the back of my boat? 20 lt bucket with a bilge that hangs in the water and plumbed into the side about 20 cm up, put the lid on with the cap off (has a pour spout in the lid) and run it off a spare battery. Also good for chuckin squid in and bangin so the empty their ink sacks (hate ink in the slurry) and bleeding fish in, thawing bait etc. Secured with a strap around the top and qn occy strap from the handle down to the extended transom

If you want to make one

Wed, 2013-12-04 22:02

If you want to make one, i would start with a cheep cooler like the colman.

I have used an esky with a small lid in the main lid before, and it worked very well except i would prefer rounder corners in it.

Bunning sell this one below too. you will need a small fish net ( like for a fish tank ) to scoop out the live bait.

These are the types ive been looking at to do mine. Bilge pumps are realy cheap to get a hold of these days too. There are a few sites on line that show how to plumb up the system.

Cheers Grant

Yeah

Wed, 2013-12-04 22:17

Yeah, i have a large transom , so the one i set up will be outside the boat. I was going to build one into the bait board but didn't think it would be big enough.

But i did put a 200 ah deep cycle battery into the boat for my instruments and engel, with a nice solar pannel on the T top i should be able to run every thing for days at a time.

Thats if i ever finish the boat . LOL . nearly there ,about 3/4 done.

Have the idea of a 20+ litre

Wed, 2013-12-04 22:17

Have the idea of a 20+ litre bucket with lid.  Holes drilled around about 3/4 the way to the top.  Closer to the top a spraying tube (the top of my existing setup) that is attached to a bilge pump or deck wash in take.  Pump the water in through a spray and it drains out through the holes...

Iv been meaning to drill

Wed, 2013-12-04 22:39

Iv been meaning to drill holes below the top cos Iv nearly lost fish when I havent put the lid on. My mate has a full marlin board (jet) so he has room for an esky which is ideal for the bigger live baits

Thu, 2013-12-05 10:45

Great idea's but you guys must be pulling your bilge pumps up every time you need to shift. Or are you leaving it in the water????

Other choice Randall

Is a home brew bucket. Awesome as an improvised Live bait tank. I have one onboard built into the boat, but a boat previous I used the home brew bucket. It was also great to collect livies with the throw net, and keeping them alive in the Pilbara heat. Then transfer them to the onboard live well. Just used a battery operated fish tank aerator for the interim move but you could easily fully plumb it.

I will look to see if I have a photo anywhere. Gave it to a mate in Kcity.

these water scoops will pump water through your tank while the boat is moving.  A rule bilge pump screws on top for when you are drifting / stationary.  Works very well!

Mini wheelie bin, some rope and cleats, bilge pump on the transom and plastic tube.  Whole thing can be installed / removed within 5 mins!  Cost under $60 (already had the bilge pump)...  bargain

Yeah, Im guna change my setup

Sun, 2013-12-08 19:59

Yeah, Im guna change my setup after this discussion, I kinda wacked it together one day and never changed it, its more of a convenient bucket that fills itself than a live bait well. I actually want to focus more on live bait trolling/fishing and the setup I have creates too much turbulence and the fish tire out and die or i leave it off and forget and they cark it. Water spilling in at the top to add oxygen and not have the turbulence, bilge speed variable via a variable resistor. Also incorporate a water pick up as the bilge is outa action when on the move. Have the water exit out the bottom via a fill level tube fitted to the outside. I love the new boats these days that have em built into the transom, the kids would love seein the fish or squid through the glass, would have to put a cool blue ligt in there for night time lol

Mark II. Pumps in at the top

Thu, 2013-12-12 19:50

Mark II. Pumps in at the top now and flows out from the bottom, added a 'water scoop' fill tube thats cable tied to the chine for when on the move and a valve to drain the bucket as I cant easily tip it now

Just gota get one of these from Jaycar so I can alter the pump's output (360gph is too strong with fully charged battery, then can turn it up as the voltage drops in the battery)
