Living in Geraldton advice
Submitted by mr_meks on Tue, 2012-01-31 13:06
We are going to have to move to geraldton very soon, and are in the process of trying to find a rental house. Unfortunately I think we're going to have to pick up a house without actually seeing it first.
Anyone got any words of wisdom regarding good/bad suburbs to live in and any other pointers I should be worried about. My only tool at the moment is google maps and street view. Drummond cove looks good to me I guess, I heard there might be somewhere to throw in a boat there?

G'day mate
As boomer said, Drummonds is nice, not sure you can put a boat in there other than say a tinny of the beach. There is a good boat ramp at the marina in town, opposite the Northgate Shopping Centre on Chapman Road. To rent I personally would not look at Rangeway, Utakarra, Karloo if i had the choice, some spots in Spalding would be a no go for me too. I'd be looking in gero itself or Beachlands close to CBD and marina. Another one is Wonthella, with a few exceptions (as far as streets go). South of town, Tarcoola, Mahomets, Wandina all worth a good look, but would probably cost you more as far as rent goes. Any more questions, PM me mate - happy to help where I can

fishing
Is there much ground between gero and the abrolhos to fish? I have no idea I really need to get a look at some charts. Bit daunting starting up somewhere with literally no idea of how to fish the place. The islands are a bit out of range for me I think.

there's quite a few on FW from Gero so a fair bit of info available by typing Geraldton into 'Search' on here.

I think Paully summed it up pretty well .
Between gero and the islands is pretty flat really. A lot of flat coral stuff tho which can produce great fish. At times at least. About 15nm out is a bit of structure.
North of town about 15nm + is some good stuff. And south about 10nm+ too. You can see this on your plotter so it tend to get fished a bit but still comes up with some great fish.
By the sounds of things you have a boat. What size ? You may find that you will get some instant friends .......lol
Anyway mr_meks, a pre welcome to you.
Cheers

Thanks for the info fellas, I can see im going to be doing a crapload of sounding around much to the dissapointment of the mrs (she gets bored quick). Whats the go in summer is it windy as a barstard all the time what. Have a 5.3 glass boat thats kind of lowish I dont think it will be very comfortable in sloppy seas.

When you get here
pop into Tackleworld in Anzac Terrace and have a chat to Lloyd for the boating options around town and Dongara. Graham Maunder at Geraldton Sports in Marine Terrace will also fill you in on land based fishing.
Accommodation wise, the other forum members have covered it pretty well.

Drummonds has a beach ramp,
Drummonds has a beach ramp, which gets used a fair bit. Ive seen up to about 6meter launched but myself I prefer to use Batavia marina, easy L&R.

pelagics
Anyone able to release any clues as to whether its worth trolling around for macks/pelagics in gero at the moment? Dont really want to travel too far maybe 20 km from town or so.

Nice one, what sort of area was that? I had a crack last week just trolling a Xrap deep just on the outside of that reef strait out from town where all the pots are. Only for just over an hour about noonish, got nuthin. 15 metres deep and 26 degree water.

You can't go wrong mate
Being an old Gero boy I can vouch for the lifestyle up there. No shortage of fishing options unless the weather stumps you. North and south of the city yields plenty of options both land based and from the boat. Good surf also. There used to be a lot of good roots up there also LOL (distant memories).
