local deep drop

Been hitting the deep drops locally for a couple of years now and have had success from Mandurah to 2 Rocks. All are min 200m, max 260m to get the grey bands.

Anyway, as they say the older you get the wiser we get, so I finally splashed out and got an electric reel.

Brett and Tony that came along thought they had better borrow one each too and as it turned out we all ended up with Daiwa Megatwin 1000's to use. Tony was a deep drop virgin and for some reason we couldn't convince him to try the wind ons?? luckily as he hit the boards with the 30kg first up (pic 1)!!

All I can say is never again will I fish over ~ 150m without one. The reel was brilliant and the fish were on the bite.

Plenty of grey bands, pinkies and little reds. Interesting it is only the grey band that would struggle to go back, the others you don't even need the release weight. Bretts came off porbbaly 40m from the surface and sure enough a minute or so later up he comes for the skipper (that's me) to claim with the gaff!!

Biggest in pic is over 30kg and smallest 12kg.

Next challenge is now for the blue eye's and hapauka's.

Being a coral bay person of ?24 years going to try for some ruby's in May too.

Agree - they're just sized, and freaken quicker than GBs

Something that worked a bit better is to get deeper (250+) or use bigger circle hookes (not that it'll fully gonna stop them, they took my 16/0 hooks before!)

Great fishing

Wed, 2013-01-02 16:02

Yes you did well, we miss the West Coast for the Dhufish, it is the Jewel of the sea.

Keep up the great work.

You might entice us back if you keep this up.

had a PM re gear etc but

Wed, 2013-01-02 16:44

had a PM re gear etc but happy to share with all.

have 1000m of 80lb fireline on the reel, used 32oz sinker as now electric but have never used anything more than 14oz with wind on prior to that??

use 100-120lb leader as the big ones will snap you / bite through in a second if use too light gear out there! been there, done that so wont get caught again.

use standard 6-7/0 hooks, no snell, but when the big ones are on the go I have used as big 12-14/0 as KBE said as there mouths are huge and caught plenty on that rig!

current can be a problem but generally find change of tide or 1 tide days (as last Friday was from memory) work best and drift < 1knot is the go.

typically when we get them you must drop right on them as you don't get the smaller bites first.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

converted

Yep, im also converted to the electric real brigade after the trip. Hadn't really considered them before but when you can sit back and crack a beer whilst a rig reels itself in to check bait- do I need to say anymore?

Was a cracker day both weather and fish wise and the skipper put us right on to the spot. and only a couple of green eye sharks for the day as well.

And about my fish getting off and floating to the surface- I was just trying to do the right thing and let the skipper catch the first fish so I flicked it off mid water!! Kept him happy.

Cheers

Great work Guys !

We were out trying but only managed green eyes. We will keep plugging away until we get it right. Weve got the electric and the nice parabolic rod to go with it, all we now need is to find fish !

Definately looks like you've got the GBs sussed. Very Nice. Lets see the sounder bring you some quality from the deep, deep water.

meant to take a pic of the sounder as its quite interesting. to me it looks like to plates of rock lying across each other creating a ledge that they hide under. on the 220-240m line I have seen it all down the coast. only got a navman 4500 (600w power) but works pretty good out there at slow speed.

anyone know anything more? would love to drop a camera down and see exactly whats going on?!

Good day out

Fri, 2013-01-04 08:08

I'm definitely a fan of the electric reels, looking to purchase one as we speak.

One of the biggest catches I have landed since arriving in WA. Looking forward to the next deep drop for sure!

A man who learns how to use

A man who learns how to use the tools he has instead of buying bigger and better and leaving it in auto mode. , most pro cray fisherman still only use 1 kw trannies and 20 yr old sounders .if it ain't broke
