Local Greenback

Well, we had some great weather over the weekend & I wasn't confident heading down to my local beach for a sesh. From past experiences, no wind nor swell isn’t too productive for choppers, mullas & pup sharks.

After keeping a close eye on seabreeze, I noticed the swell & wind had marginally picked up. The decision was made to give it a crack & Sam was keen to watch, so I knew having her around would bring some good luck.

Arrived around 5:30pm & sent some burley out in hope to get a few hezza's (for bait). Unfortunately, the herring weren't around (it's been a while since they have shown). The finger size whiting were in abundance so I gave up after 30 minutes.

I waited for the sun to disappear & sent out some mulies. Not long later, I was onto the first chopper! Bingo, some fresh mulla bait!

By this stage, the missus was getting cold & asking the ‘what time is it’ question.

I took a healthy slab off the chopper & rigged it up. About 3 minutes after it hit the water, the rod buckled over! After working it to the shoreline & over the reef, I was surprised to see an above average metro greenback! I was quite lucky it didn’t bite through the 60lb leader because the leading snelled hook was down it’s throat.

A few pics later, I sent him back into the water!

I begged the missus for a bit more time & threw another slab out. The reel started singing & I waited a moment before I set the hook. I called it for a mulla due to it’s tail kicks & the distinctive first run with the bait. Unfortunately, I lost it at the reef!

Til next time fellas.

Daz
