Logging on

G'day,

Can somone give me some pointers regarding logging on and off with the sea rescue?

From my TL3 course I did about 5 years ago I remember the following things you have to state,

  • Fuel quantity
  • How many people on bord
  • expected arrival time
  • intended destination
  • Call sighn
  • Size of your boat?

Im just having drama with the order, Have I missed anything? If somone could give me an example of the conversation they have when logging on an off it would be great.

Cheers

Rob

Varies and Joining

Sun, 2008-06-08 08:43

Having logged onto VMR610 (Albany Sea Rescue) and VN6DI (Fremantle Volunteer Sea Rescue), I've found that information requirements will vary slightly. For instance VMR610 don't require fuel amount.

If you log on to one Sea Rescue group, it's a good idea (and a worthwhile donation) to join them, that way they have all your boat, address, vehicle, trailer and contact details. That's what I did with VMR610.

Before I was a member, whilst the basic onfo requested was the same, departure, destination, people, ETR, there where times I was asked for a mobile number and car rego.

So, if using a regular service, join them, or give them a call.

they ask for fuel amounts

Sun, 2008-06-08 09:55

they ask for fuel amounts from what i understand is so they know by the size of your boat how far you are likely to go as they hate going out to tow someone back in because of no fuel as its a volonteer service not the r a c .i feel that its a no brainer to go out with a full tank anyway .

Over and Out

Sun, 2008-06-08 10:26

Ah yes, and the movies still havent got it right LOL. Yes, it's either Over OR Out - but never both. Basically Over is used to signal the end of your transmission when you expect that you will need to respond further, for instance when logging in. Out is used when you don't expect to make a further transmission, for example, when confirming that the rescue service has the details correct.

Prepare in your mind what you are going to say, don't just press the 'hammer' - microphone transmit button. When you start off, it's not a bad idea to have a 'prompt card' handy - then your transmission is orderley, succinct and comprehensive.

Cheers Spess, let's face it, it's not difficult. So many people, down here included, make that mistake.
