Luck

 Hi all,

so I've had abit luck with catching the elusive mulloway lately, but I'm wondering if there's anything I might be doing wrong or need adjusting because I've found that the bulk of my catch of mulloway have been around the 60-70cm mark.

So in the past 4 sessions I've caught 9 and 8 of those have been in the 60-70cm mark.

1 was just under the metre mark.

so the question is why is it that I'm catching mostly the soapies? Oviously there's more soapies around than the bigger ones but surely something's may increase the chances? Or no

would appreciate some input from those that have had success with them.

thanks

You said it

you said it Abz, some people take years just to get a soapie, and we have seen members on here catch a monster on thier first try.

Just keep doing what you are doing and it will happen, and then it will be all over and seem like a dream. Just make sure you get a picture and post it up, I can't wait to see the beast.

My friends got a few about the same size up at hill river last weekend. So it does seem there are a lot around but not all are small. I got some pictures sent to me a few days ago of realy nice(aprox) 20 kg fish, all caught local from Quinns to Club Cap .

Thanks for that mate. Defo

Thanks for that mate. Defo will upload a photo once I get on to that sort of fish.

I wonder if there's any sort of research done on mulloway behaviour and habits etc. I know they eventually swim and hunt alone as they get in the bigger sizes but it will be intresting to know more, specially if there's some type of scientific study or research.

I always

Thu, 2013-11-21 21:23

I always got told they hang in pairs .

Here is a couple this week , one from quinns and one from club cap.  I had to blank the guy's face, cause i couldn't get in contact with him to get permission to post the picks.

I know they look like the same fish, but definately not. I have the exif data, but removed it to protect the gps data.

Not sure what bait your using

Not sure what bait your using but maybe try some bigger baits, you'd be suprised at the size of the baits the big ones will eat.

You are doing the right thing for sure

Fri, 2013-11-22 08:20

if you are getting soapy's.

Just have to persevere and it will change. But to get the small ones off a species means the species are responding to your presentation, and that is what you want.

I use to (when I was young) persistently mulla fish, and it took me ages to "crack" the soapy code. Then caught a few, and soon the bigger ones ended up on the line. Now I just cant be shagged spending those hours on the beach

 I Think the reason there

Fri, 2013-11-22 09:25

I Think the reason there alot of soapies around is due to the fact that earlier in the year they put i think it was 300 or more juvinelle mulloway in the swan river

 Lastcast,ill check that

Fri, 2013-11-22 12:52

 Lastcast,

ill check that thesis out in google should be good.

Paul,

i usually have 3 rods in water, one gets a whole mullet, the other gets filleted tailor or watever else I may catch fresh with the fourth smaller rod and the third rod gets mullies.

zain,

I've read about the mulloway program they have going but I don't fish the river for mulloway and actually I'm nowhere near the river, not sure how many years this program has been on for but soapies I seem get are in the 60-70cm range and are not in river.

Thats ok

Fri, 2013-11-22 13:09

Thats ok Abz, a bit of a tease with pictures like that. I havn't landed a big Mulla in a long time myself.

Just a heads up bro, check the regulations on how many rods you can have in the water per angler. You will find you are only allowed to use 2 rods per person, you can have as many as you want set up ready to go , but only the two in the water at the same time. Just letting you know so you don't find out the hard way if fisheries turn up .

Cheers Grant  .

I have sent him a pm and he is cool with it. I think he has mates with him so all good.

But it is nice to get a concerned warning from us rather than a $$$$fine.
