Mako caught off Mindarie

Hi Guys,

Well it's turning out to be a great summer of fishing for us this year. Today I was able to mark off another fish from my fishing wish list. We put the boat in at Mindarie early this morning and headed north to around the Two Rocks area I think, it's a little hard to tell where you are when you are out deep. First I caught a nice little bronzie about a metre long. Nice way to start the day and wake you up. Then after about our 5th spot we noticed a big bait school near the bottom and there were bigger fish under the school. My line was first in the water and as soon as it hit the bottom I felt something strange, I thought it was a snag at first but then I felt the weight of a big fish kicking and my first thought was here we go it’s going to be a big dhufish, but as I set the hook my reel lit up and the fish was heading for the surface, the three of us on the boat couldn’t believe our eyes as a massive mako shark launched itself into the air about 6 times. We managed to get it up to the side of the boat after chasing it around for a while.  Not a bad effort for 30lb gear. It was my first mako and I will never forget seeing it fly out of the water. I have attached a you tube video, unfortunately we didn’t get any of the jumps but still some ok footage. After we let the mako go we did another drift at a different spot and my wife got a double header, 65cm dhu and 50cm baldie.  Great day and we were home for lunch.

Great mako - you did damned well to land it without wire trace!

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

getting the bottom line final answer from a bunch of blokes that use false names and put smiley faces at the end of paragraphs is not the best place in the world to get the information you seek.

I know they are supposed to be good eating but it was a little big for us to try and get on the boat. i was happy watching it swim away, so i can try and catch it again when it gets meter longer.
