A Mako in the Water

It Came crusing right up to the side with the cheekiest Grin

So i had to bait up and try to catch this cheeky Mako

It took the bait and what a fight it gave

landed after around 30 mins fighting this large mako But it was never so happy as when it was safely  released

Never High stick: Anglers know that keeping your rod tip high maintains pressure on the fish, but in the excitement of the fight many anglers become overzealous when it comes to bringing that fish in. The term "high stick" refers to over angling the rod which in turn creates too much pressure on the rod tip, and can result in a snapped rod. When the fish is close to the boat try not to lift your rod any higher then 90 degrees. keeping the rod taught, but not over arched, will be sufficient for maintaining pressure on the fish, and reducing stress on your tip.

3rd Pic

Sat, 2009-01-03 12:07

If you look at the 3rd pic Russ you can see you have the rod almost pointing straight up ans the line going straight down. This makes the rod load up nearer the tip than it was designed too and can cause rods to go POP.

You can see the differences in the way the rod loads up between the pics you have put up

That 'bouy' is obviously very flotation efficient! Sealed

Think you'd need a concrete slab as a release weight on that one Tongue out

make sure you have a tag ready so scientists can track the migratory habits of the mako for research purposes. Maybe play it safe and tag the mako twice to make sure one doesn't shake free.
