Can anyone tell me anything about fishing in the Maldives?
I'm going there in Nov and want to know do i take some rods and tackle? or can i hire a decent charter when I'm there I'd like to do both but would rather not bother if it is crap.
can you fish from the bank or over water bunglows?
what sort of money are they asking for charters?
I can't seem to find to much info about the place ( fishing wise ) on the net , does anyone have any advice for me?

lost
I can't get a straight answer out of the people that run the place .
Because the turnips that run the joint don't speak english perfectly and aren't that interested in fishing when you ask them "can i fish from my bungalow " they just say "you can fish here ! We have boat" when you ask " are you allowed to catch fish from the beach " they say there is lots of fish at beach"

Learn to speak dhivehi, dont
Learn to speak dhivehi, dont expect them to speek perfect english while your in their nation. The vegetable isnt the person that is multilingual but the person that suggests everyone should be able to talk english.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

No you won't be able to fish
No you won't be able to fish off the over water bungalow, alot of the resorts have environmental protection in place for the marine life etc. otherwise it would be devoid. I thoroughly enjoyed kicking back with a beer & watching fish race over the reef to smash bait balls as well as jumping off the balcony to snorkel around amazing corals.
Maldivians are lovely people who are super stoked to engage in any yarns to improve their English... not turnips

as Lamby mentioned, you won't
as Lamby mentioned, you won't be able to fish from the bugalows or most resort beaches due to sanctuary zoning. If they have a boat, just show them some green & I am sure they will take you beyond the reef for a fish. Otherwise, if the resort you're staying at has a charter boat, just jump on that for a day (most likely trolling etc).
Otherwise, they're human beings, not turnips, you just need to be patient & respect that not everyone can speak english.

Attitude adjustment is
Attitude adjustment is required it would appear. Maybe 6 days in the Maldives with a bad case of food poisoning and no dunny paper may assist your multilingual skills, if the 'turnips' can be bothered talking to you.

you all are right
I do appoligise for calling the person on the phone a turnip .
I didn't mean to insinuate the whole country was a back water and they should speak english or die.
generally they seem very well spoken and pleasant to speak to. but It is exteremly agrevating when they understand everything you ask them but when it comes to asking about fishing they don't quite get what i'm asking.
I obviously need to stop expecting them to know what it is i want and being a rude C@NT and just go there and let it happen.
I'm sure i'll get some fish in the 5 weeks i'm there
thank you all for the wake up call

humility is always an option
I didn't mean to offend anyone just a little frustrated with the language barrier.
when its costing as much as a new HSV for a holiday you want to get the answers you need to to uncloud your head and i wasn't gettig them!
but as everyone including yourself has pointed out I need you just let it happen and understand that not everyone knows what i want and i should be more relaxed .
of course there will be fishing available and hopefully I'll get 1 or 2.

Chriso,Good to see your last
Chriso,
Good to see your last response there mate, I can give you basic info without knowing more details of your trip. I had a great time over there but had limited fishing as that wasn't the purpose. The resort charters will be expensive & the fishing is mainly trolling & popping for them (I did jig a few times but no sounder on board made life difficult) I will certainly be back to fish / surf but will do a live aboard charter & the missus won't be in tow.
Take US Dollars with you even if the resort is inclusive, use this to tip the staff that look after you & it will be returned in spades. I was gobsmacked to see how rude guests treated the Maldivian & other (Sri Lankan, Phillipino, Inidan etc) resort staff. I get it you fork out big bucks for a luxurious holiday in paradise but to assume you are entitled to treat others poorly playing "big man" is pure wank IMO.
The staff are great & almost all of them will have limited contact with their families but work damn hard to provide a better life for them. Take the time to chat with them & hear their stories. The staff that I slipped a few dollars made sure the missus was on cloud 9, the barman had me well oiled & when the chef found out I had split fillets with the crew for their bbq we enjoyed an amazing traditional Maldivian feast with Jobfish, Coronation Trout, Wahoo & Tuna
Hope you enjoy

thanks
I'll be living with these people for a little over a month and i assure there will be no "big man" attitude and I am a generous tipper especially when someone makes even the slightest of effort outside there job description. Thank you very much for the info and advice i will take some green backs to grease some palms as I think you can almost buy a U.S. state for about $6 Australian now can't you?
when you say the charters are expensive what sort of $$ are you talking about ? more than $2000 for the day ?
do you recomend i take my own tackle(rods, reels, lures..etc)?

It all depends on the resort
It all depends on the resort but from memory a charter was $1200 or 1400 a day but I also fished cheaply by flicking the local boys some money to shoot out in the 'dhoni'
Tackle- took all my own, didn't really see what they had on board apart from some TLD's but that is a personal preference thing for me

Funny you should mention red
Funny you should mention red bass.......I noticed on a show on ABC last week, twopommies were sailing around the world, and ate crimson perch they caught in Tahiti.........a few hours later they had tingling hands and numb mouth, then sick as dogs....the dreaded cigatera.
Tuna and trevelly are safe....nothing red!!!!!!That being said, hard to pass a nice coral trout as long as its not too big.
