Managing your deck space

Just got me thinking after another thread about landing fish. How do you all manage your deck space? I've got mine fairly streamlined now, no esky on board as I've installed two below deck drainable kill tanks, the esky stays in the back of the ute along with the cold beers for the end of the day :). We usually  freeze up block ice from 2L icream containers or 2L milk bottles to cool the fish. I have a green tackle bag with sealable trays of terminal tackle and a small plastic box with pliers, knives and all all that crap. Landing net is tucked up the side of the gunnel in easy reach and the gaff hangs of the the rod holders. I've basically found you can take too much crap out that's never used, so I just cater now for the targeted species with tackle etc. Always have a bucket on deck for washing down the blood and thawing bait etc.

All the trays for rigs and terminal tackle go under the drivers seat, all plastics and jigs go into the other seat, only thing on deck is the esky on one side as we only fish out of one side, the net is tucked in between the side of the boat and passengers seat, sea anchor up the front under the beds,  gaf is kept out of harms way under rod holders(rarely gets used) all the trawling stuff is all together under a seat aswell, works good for us, we've tried using the under floor tank for keeping fish and not bring the esky, just not big enough for the bigger fish so that got scrapped and used as a bin

Ha ha at least you still get use out of your floor tank Troy. I made mine quite big as I knew there'd be big fish going in there ;)

I have been thinking about this lately (again)

Sun, 2014-04-27 18:01

A tidy deck and everything has a place, what a dream.
Those fibreglass seat boxes are just useless junk bins & I want to do away with what I have.
The other issue is having the boat at home unsecured, so I have to take everything inside i.e. flares, epirb, life jackets etc.
I was looking at making up seat frames out of 25mm s/s tube to stow the anchor under and eski but plans have changed.
I'm now thinking of stowing items of value or safety under the seats, and having removable but lockable panels to stop theft.
When going out to sea, the panels could be removed off the boat, and all that gear is stowed and visual for everyone to easily access.

Beers

I think you have made a very grave mistake by leaving an esky with beers in it back in your car that's the first thing you pack in your boat before heading out and before anyone says it no I always drink responsibly

It's very hard to bring all the stuff you need for fishing on some one else's boat lol, use a Coles bag for that, ends up being so heavy lol.. And usually have no where but the floor to put it

Just what is needed

Sun, 2014-04-27 19:21

It's always been a 2 rod limit on any of my boats, even more so now that I've downsized to a tinny. Only take what is required, ie; we don't take squidding rods when we're dhuie bashin, or take the trolling gear when squidding.

i had gunnels welded into the tinny, best move ever. Just keeps essential shit like pliers, launch rope, and gaff off the floor, and within quick easy reach when required.

also got an anchor well installed on the bow, so now have a semi dry storage area where the anchor used to live. Also boxed out in front of the forward seat, and life jackets, sea anchor, flares, etc all stored in there, with room for 3 guys dive equipment if needed.

I only ever take a small tackle box, and rigs are pre-tied and stored in ziplock bags. Lures are all grouped into tackle trays (squid jigs, trolling lures, metals, casting, blah blah), and only come on board if that's what we are doing.

3 x 20L buckets, that all fit into each other (so it's no different than taking 1 bucket) 1 for bait, 1 for rubbish, and 1 for cleaning the deck, etc. I made a special occy strap to keep the buckets in place, up against the gunnels.
