Mandurah Crabs

Anyone been down yet to see if there are many around?

Went down a week ago on the jet skis, there were stacks of boats out trying to get some.

Spoke to a couple guys at the ramps who said they got a few but lots of small ones.

anyone been out getting any good sized oens yet?

Cheers

Bodie

Scooping on Harvey Estuary

Wed, 2009-01-07 09:45

Have been scooping twice in last 3 weeks halfway down the Harvey estuary.  They were all very small the first time.

Slightly larger the second time.

So another month and they should be right to go.

Have read in another post that they are getting limit near dawesville.....

Cheers,

Pete

Went Down to ther mandurah eatuary last saturday will the fam and 4 boats well all got our bag limit of good sized grabs but it was hard work and the were heaps of little ones. we have all worked on a home made gauge we made which is 130mm instead of 127mm to make the ones we keep a better size to eat i but in saying that we got home and went to a mates house and cooked them up and they were very hollow. Maybe im just used to swan crabs being so full but was quite dissapointed buy neways all in all a good day ON THE WATER.

Crabs

Wed, 2009-01-07 10:52

went crabbing in mandurah two weeks ago...i went out in the arvo when it was windy we got ten in 2 hours. Talking to other people, they bagged out in the calmer weather. They seemed to be in the shallow water, when we were there. Used tins of cat food in our nets..crabs loved it!

Catching Crabs

Wed, 2009-01-07 12:03

Best place to catch crabs is around the groin[groyne]region.

Cut the top out of a new 20litre metal drum, squat on drum with goolies dangling inside then beat the daylight out of the drum with a lump of wood. The crabs let go of the hair they are hanging onto to cover their ears from the noise and drop into the bottom of the drum.
You are left scratchless now that all your crabs are now gone

i went down to the peel

Wed, 2009-01-07 12:42

i went down to the peel inlet scooping last week. Caught about 80 legal sized swimmers between 5 of us within a few hours. Fired up a fire, cooked a few, had enough, let the rest go, went home. I suggest you go down there. Look up Duke street, its near there. Its shortly before the cut coming from perth. Post up how you go.

Carnarvonite got some nasty

Wed, 2009-01-07 17:15

Carnarvonite got some nasty crabs goin on there by the sounds... ;-)

Went out over new Year. Heaps of small ones a few mm under, got ditracted by EB after that, and wind blew it's ring out. Also have a 230mm gauge to be on safe side. Does not stop some however, evidence of undersize cakkers that someone thought were good to go that had been cooked up in carpark and shells discarded (tossers).

With all this heat, give it a few weeks and it will be alive with size ones everywhere...that or pick a quiet weekday and suss the pro lines out for locations and pot within a respectable distance from them?

Went out on the weekend as i

Wed, 2009-01-07 17:58

Went out on the weekend as i do every weekend and saw plenty in the water. But werent to many sized ones. Im thinking at least another month before they get there. Plus there are a lot of soft ones around at the moment. So you think you have a huge sized one and then you touch it and it is soft. But it is still good to get out and about on the water

Mandurah Crabs

We were there over the Christmas and New Years break, around 1 size for every 10 under size, should be better in the next few weeks, try on the Australia day long weekend or early Feb, the numbers and size should be a lot better. Best of luck.

Any day now...

Sat, 2009-01-10 18:00

Went out just before Chrissie...nothin' but little ones. Went out last Tuesday, got 9 but the biggest was maybe 135mm. That's a big enough improvement for me to go have another look next week.

According to my log from last year, we bagged out (boat limit) on the 6th of January so it would appear they are running a bit late this year?
