mmm, I'll believe it when I see it. Biggest I know of (and confirmed) is around the 42lb mark, never ever heard of a 50lb snapper.
If it's true then I think the snapper bragging crown is going to live in Melbourne with your mate for a looooonnnnggg time.

Im not sure

it would have been 25kgs, because the current Australian record is 18.4 kgs in 1994. If that weight is right, its an amazing catch. cheers Pete Smile

Pinks

Wed, 2010-08-25 16:23

I would normally not believe that pinkies grow so large, but not so long ago I was shown a photo of a pink snapper that would have given 20kg a nudge. The person who showed me the photo works at a well known local tackle shop, and after having caught pinkies to 12-13kgs, I can testify what I saw was much larger!!

In W.A the min size for pink

Wed, 2010-08-25 18:23

In W.A the min size for pink snapper is 50cm, though must wait till breeding season is over.....so we can only take breeding fish, once they've had their root, i guess. Rather be catching, and keeping, 35-45cm and releasing the big-uns to breed. better eating them smaller ones are!

You can, you just need to go

Wed, 2010-08-25 18:26

You can, you just need to go north of 31°S.   (well 41cm min)

'Breeding season' is only in the sound (oct-jan), but theres also a 'general ban', but debatable whether that actually coincides with breeding season outside the sound for demersals in general... Undecided

Not so easy if you're a lb

Wed, 2010-08-25 18:41

Not so easy if you're a lb fisho. Oh the joys of having a uni fish farm a bees dick from the south mole! They know Everything!!! And as for fishing outside the zone, apparently the regs  apply to where you land your boat. ie. I catch a 41 cm snapper outside the zone, then dock at Hillarys, I'm busted!

I don't dispute it, I remember my uncle and my dad found a pinkie head floating in the sound back in the early 70s that went 28lb on it's own, it had been bitten off by quite a big shark.

Cheers

Seen one caught in cervantes once.

Thu, 2010-08-26 10:32

went 25kg on the scales. Massive fish. caught by a comercial on a shark hook. Ive been chasing the photo for years. like some of these catches the blokes that land them, there not that interested and wouldnt even consider a recorded weigh in.

Nigel cowe was his name. If anyone whos him hit him up. It took a surface hook on the 7footers

Port Augusta is actually in

Wed, 2012-01-18 17:38

Port Augusta is actually in South Australia, 40 mins from a coastal town called whyalla which has an annual snapper fishing comp. i grew up there and have seen some BIG snapper come in on the boats as a kid.. Although i dont think they are pinkies, i am led to believe theyre reds.. (not an expert so i dont know if there is a difference) Anyhow im sure i have seen a snapper over 20kgs, but i could be wrong as i was quite young

dodgy, the pic you put up is

Wed, 2012-01-18 19:21

dodgy, the pic you put up is a bloke down here in Bunbury who works with my fishing buddy Garbo in the building industry and caught that fish out near where the ships anchor a few years back. It went over 18kg if I remember correctly.

I've caught them to 14 kg's in the past off Bunbury, but probably my most memorable year targeting Snapper was when the local Bunbury comp. used to be held, and on this occasion it was quite a few years back now, I managed to catch a nearly 12kg Snapper and thought I had the $1000 prize in the back as the history of the comp had never seen Snapper that big caught at that time of year.

There I was getting the fish weighed and media doing the photo shoots, me with a smile as big as big as big can be! Judge on his microphone in the back ground saying, "That Snapper will be hard to beat!" See link for pic below.

Then from round the corner of the Power Boat Club building I spy this fella with a huge fish over his shoulders and gasps from onlookers as he struggled past them.

Secretly I was saying to myself, "Please don't let that be a Snapper! Please don't" Ha Ha! and it was! Just shy of 15kg was the fish so I was left with 2nd prize.

I probably wouldn't keep a Snapper that big anymore, choosing rather to get a photo, then release it.

It's all garbage I live in

Tue, 2012-01-24 05:29

It's all garbage I live in SA and there's no such thing as a 25kg snapper

Wouldve been all over the news and fishing world here

@ sea-kem the bigger fish lose taste we prefer to release the biggies and enjoy them for the fight and keep the smaller pan size for eating
